RX-8 Service and Oil Change ?'s

I just had my cars 5k mile service done this morning. When I made the appointment the guy said it was 80 bucks, wasnt sure what it included since the owners manual only shows an oil change. After it was done the invoice showed an oil change, tire rotation, and brake inspection. And the invoice said 5 qts 10w30 oil. The service manager said that comes up for all cars and it had 5w30.
Also, the guy who actuall changed the oil put the little sticker in the window saying to get the oil done in 3k miles, everything else I have seen says 5k. Which makes me wonder what oil is actually in my car.

I was sondering if everyone takes the car in every 5k for this service or just changes the oil themselves (or take's it to a oil change place). In the owners manual it looks like every service is the same (with the exception of an air filter cleaning @ 15k), until a big one at 30k which looks pretty extensive. I figure the 10k mile will be around the time I plan to put my winter tires on, so the rotation will be pointless. If everything else stays the same my 10k service would be an $80 oil change.

I don't have my owner's manual here at the office to check for sure, but I thought tire rotation wasn't scheduled until 7500K - maybe the service manager thought yours needed it sooner because of wear? Or maybe you were just being hustled. Hard to say without more info.

And the oil should be 5W-20, not 30. Some people on the forum have apparently had trouble getting this through to certain dealers.

That's frightening to hear they just stuck in 5w-30, considering the freaking oil cap itself even says 5w-20 right on it. When I get my first oil change, I definitely intend to leave a piece of paper in the car stating "USE 5w-20 GRADE OIL ONLY!" That, and I'd probably have to remind them not to shut down the engine cold.

I thought the 5-20 versus 5-30 is that the 5-30 is better for the engine (viscosity), the 5-20 would get slightly better gas mileage. Not sure which thread I gathered that from.

My service writer said it doesn't matter.

When I do it myself (refill, changes), I use 5-20.

Well the owner manual gives a range of oil to use in certain temperature range. Depends on the climate. Australia being hotter, even in Melbourne, use 5W30, mineral based. This is the Mazda rotary oil that Mazda Australia provided.

Funny that you commented that changing oil too frequently. Yes I had two track day in my car but I have changed 3 times in 14000km. I aimed to change every 5000km (ie. 3000 odd miles). Frequent oil changing keep the car clean and you don't have to worry when you rev to 9000rpm with dirty oil.

5W-20 seems the norm in US even redline in US recommand (5W20) differently to redline in Australia (5w30 or 10W30)
