At least we have LoJack Mike... gives me a "tiny" bit more comfort. Supposedly there is a 90% recovery withing the first 30 minutes of car being stolen. Guess it wouldn't work in this situation since it was parked overnight and the owner wasn't even there.

You might get the car back, but I can gurantee they have done "Pick-a-Part" on your 8. Years back, my father had a Supra stolen from his work in Torrance and they recovered it at LAX, stripped. Sorry for your loss.

If you have LoJack Early Warning, you get a key fob (actually 2). If the car moves while that key fob is not present, it automatically sends a signal to LoJack, which then automatically tries to notify you through phone, message, e-mail, up to 5 mechanisms that you specify. You then call LoJack, tell them the car is missing or whatever, and they activate the signal in the car, then call the police. If he got a call on his cell while he was even in another state, he could call LoJack and the search starts even though he's nowhere near LA.

*Knock on wood*

I travel all the time for business and when I do have to drive to the airport (typically on one-to-two day trips, I park it in Valet parking at the United or American terminals. A fiver to the car hiker gets it parked in the "rock star row" of hot cars right in front of the door. Either way, it's in a secured area of the terminal garage - it can't leave without passing by the security guard. I'd say that's the safest.

That said, years ago, my wife and I had her "baby" stolen - a 1987 Acura Integra and they took it right out of our garage. We had a two car garage in a townhome, and we had just moved into the unit - didn't have a garage door opener yet, and never locked the garage at night. Someone opened the door, walked in, and stole it right out of the garage, and then opened the door into my '85 RX-7 sitting there and stole my radar detector, golf clubs and briefcase. Right out of the garage!

Hope they don't find it, get a new one. It's just a car. That's why you have it insured.

Sry to hear about the lose, I don't want to think what I would do if some stole any of my cars. Good thing I keep on-star registered. Don't want anyone stilling the big truck, or the caddy (caddy not exactly mine, but I drive it the most).

Interesting (and scary) article from the NY Times on the very subject of cracking the code on our immobilizer keys: http://tinyurl.com/48pn9

And another on how "helpful" dealership employees will make a new key for anybody with a VIN and a sob story: http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/...28/detail.html

Sorry to here about your loss buddy!

For those of you in Michigan region:

I work with a cop he's undercover at night and works a totally different job during the daywith me, I have no idea how he does it.

I saw him one day and he rushed in and asked me if my rx-8 has been stolen!

Surprized, I said no and ran out to the parking lot to see if my red beauty was there.

It was safe and sound in the gated parking lot....

He told me the reason he was so concerned is that one was stolen in Allen Park...and another in Inkster. (Both citys are on both sides of mine.)

He thought one of the ones stolen may have been mine. Are these things becoming crimnals goals or something?

Ouch! A fellow blue 8 stolen. That's really scary how they were able to break into the car without the alarm going off and bypassing the immobilizer. We seriously need a flamethrower type security system.

Don't care.

I have had a small piece of index card covering all but the first 2 characters of the VIN in the windshield since the day I bought mine. If I were stopped for any reason it takes one second to uncover. If police have some reason to look at the VIN when I am not around, they can see that the plate is still there. They can get all the information they need from the license plate anyway.

Same here- my old Miata didn't have an immobiliser, and you could get a key cut from internet vendors with just a Vin#, so I kept it covered with black electrical tape. I was pulled over several times (for other reasons : ) and never had a cop mention anything about it...

Update-- no news- Cops said if it was a "joy" ride--would have most likley herd by now.. Since we have not- the car is probably gone.-- I did pass along to the cops some of the ideas I received from this site.. They said the Vin--number- can be a channel-- and even if covered-- the Lic. Plate can start the tracking--they did not tell me how all this occurs, other then it does. They said this is not an easy car to steal, but any car be stolen, and if it's targeted, and the right opportunity arrises, it's gone.
On a more positive note- my insurance is going to for-go the 30 day wait period my policy has, because it was leased-- I had the "GAP" insurance- which helps out a lot.. I test drove several cars over the weekend, including the new- Mustang, 350Z, I am going to get another 8.

Think I will keep my VIN covered from now on. If I get pulled over and they say something, I will just explain my hiding the vin and uncover it for them to do what they need to do.

Me too, VIN NO MORE, that baby is getting coverd ASAP!

I am so sorry for your 8, I'm sorry man...so sorry...FREAKEN THEIVES!!!!!

Now this story has me scared, I was driving and I notied that these 3-4 guys in a SUV just happened to be driving behind me. I did not pay attention but I noticed two things:

(1) They were eye-balling my car/house/etc (maybe just checking out my 8)
(2) They did not stop and go into a house on my road, but kept driving around and turned off my street.

I decided (with the power of paranoia) to pull out of my driveway and look for the guys leaving or entering another house. So, I drove off...drove through the main road so I could look at each road...NOTHING...they were gone. So, either they found the place they were looking for...or, they were following me back to my house.

Now, I park my car (told my wife too) and leave it with the alarm armed. This story...has fueled my paranoia...but I would be SOOOOO ANGERY about my 8 getting stolen,...gosh...so sad...

Sorry again, good luck on what ever happens and I kinda hope they don't find it so you can get a new 8. If they do, I hear that it is never the same and you have a raped kinda feeling.

GOD BLESS...

I would ask the people who own the parking lot how they let your car out without the parking ticket. In Atlanta, you show up without your ticket and it raises suspicion instantly. They make copies of drivers licenses, etc.

Sorry to hear about your car but LAX security's just worthless, all they're good for is to give people tickets. Got a ticket for no front license plate simply from parking at the parking lot, and almost got one for "waiting" even though I was there for less than 15 secs and was proceeding to call my girlfriend to have to come over here because I passed her and the area where she was at had too many cars. I even told the ******* that too, WTH Where do they find those ********? I'm sure they're all for the goods of the people are secruity.. right..

Anyways, I guess it's probably better to have the car as a total loss now, at least you'll be getting a new one, but didn't your last one get totalled too?

If they did infact get a key made from Mazda from a Vin#, wouldn't Mazda have it on record as a purchased invoice? (might be something to look into).
Also, don't they need at least one orig key to make a duplicate with the WDS system?
