My oldest is 13 - I've got about 3 years to plan for this, and when it's time, he will get a nice, sensible-shoes 4 door, used Civic to motor around in. That's all he needs. And he won't be allowed to mod it or rice it out. No fart cannons in my house. Because it will be MY CAR. He will just be allowed to drive it.
When he makes his own money, he can buy whatever he damn well pleases.

I have an interesting little story, but I must appologize in advance for the spelling mistakes and the bad grammer. In my defense, I should have been asleep 4 hours ago.
My family has a pair of cars; an Acura MDX on lease until the end of January and a 1993 Chrysler Minivan that is on its last leg. My dad drives the minivan the 5 miles back and forth to the bus stop every day, and my mom peruses the town in the MDX. Periodically, when my dad needs to visit clients, he takes the MDX because it is considered more of a luxury car, and his job calls for him to present himself in a different manner (terrible, isn't it?). My mom is left with the minivan.
Because of this arangement, when I turned 17 this past September, my dad wanted to replace the minivan with a different car and buy a car for me and him to share. I would have been obligated to drop him off and pick him up at the bus stop daily, in return for the ability to drive the car to and from school and wherever I felt like driving.
Now, my dad is no where near one to throw away money, and is not vain at all, but he suggested a sports car because he always wanted one when he was younger, but never had the opportunity (he literally had no money until he was 25 - he lived on $4000 from 20-24 because he was on a student visa and not allowed to work and my grandmother had no money of her own, making pennies as a math teacher. Well, since he had no opportunity, he wanted to give me something he would have loved. So he threw out the 350Z. Now, being 17, I drool over cars of that genre (more the RX-8, but still, A FREAKING 350Z!?!?! Can you comprehend that?!?!), so when he mentioned that car, I was jumping all over.
So later that night, I told the girlfriend, and when I was driving home (in the MDX), I did some reflection. I realized it would be a terrible investment. We are a family of six and that car seats only two. What happens if the MDX breaks down? Additionally, I was a new driver and if I as much as scratched that car, I would have felt absolutely terrible. Also, considering the type of crappy people I go to school with, they would have keyed it anywho. I explained to my dad that I appreciated his offer, but it does not make sense. He would have to dip into his savings a great deal for something of minimal enjoyment. A car is a medium in which to transport a person from one area of amusement to another area of amusement. Therefore, it is not all that important for the car to be sexy, cool, sporty, or anything of the sort. As long as it could get me from point A to point B, I would be content.
Well my telling him this made him want to give me the car with even more ferocity. He really wanted to give it to me, not just because I am young and want to drive a sporty car, but because I DEMONSTRATED MY APPRECIATION for what he was offering, so much so, to realize that it was something I should not have.
Coincidentally, the following day, my family learned that my father was not the only one contemplating purchasing me a new car. My grandparents had secretly been shopping for a car, and decided to buy one (One of those special edition SRT-8 Chrysler 300s. It's one scary car...). My grandmother phoned us asking if I wanted her old car, or if she should trade it in for one and a half thousand dollars. It was a 1996 Chrysler Concorde. Big car, fits 6 people comfortably. No CD player. My parents said it was my decision. I decided to take my Grandma's car over a 350Z or an RX-8 or a G35 or any other car my father would have purchased for me. Additionally, I am paying my Grandma for the depreciation in value that occurs from me using it. That means at the end of the year, when I give it back to her for her to sell, I will make up the difference in the money that she would have gotten as opposed to what she did get.
This was a wise decision on my part. Why? Well so far (since October), I've been involved in 3 seperate incidents.
First, I was pulling out of a parallel parking spot in a place where there were cars passing me on the left at 30 MPH, and I was a bit leary of them, so I accidentally sideswiped the car ahead of me. A small mark on my car, nothing on the other kids car. No issue.
Second, some B*TCH was signalling for a right turn at a T intersection, so I started to make a left turn. She decided she did not want to make the right turn anymore and smacked me in the front of my car. She left a black streak accross half of my front bumper. I was fumed. To add insult to stupidity, I got a lecture on how you are not supposed to trust anyone else on the road and how I need to be more cautious. Well, insurance deductable and rates hikes made it to my disadvantage to file a claim, and the lady knew that, so she refused to settle. Therefore we had to let her go.
The third and most recent incident happened when I decided to take the MDX out to a restaurant with my friends since it was raining out and I prefer it in the rain with its HID's and AWD. Anyways, after eating, I was driving towards the exit, and a retarded friend of mine fails to look out his rearview mirror before pulling out. He floored it, and smacked the MDX in the front. We settled it under the table, but needless to say, I do not need this crap.
So what it has come down to, is that I am an unlucky driver ;-). Had I been driving a 350Z or an RX-8 or any other sexy sports car out there, I would have HAD to fix the car in the first two incidents because the whole reason why we have the car is for its astethics. Regardless, because of the maturity I seem to have shown my parents, my dad is dead set on buying me a car for my Sophomore year in college, and for that I am very grateful.
Why did I go through this entire story? Because some of you other posters out there who are elder seem to be a little jealous of those who were more fortunate than yourselves when you were a kid. What would you have done had your parents offered up a Mustang or any sexy sports car?
Honestly, not everyone who receives a car from their parents when they come of age to drive is stuck up and spoiled. Some understand. The key thing is whether or not the kid appreciates what he or she has been given, or if he or she feels as if he or she is entitled to it.
I am proud to drive any car, let alone a Chrysler Concorde. Especially since I improved on the cars deficiencies, mounting a portable DVD player (yes, I bought it myself...) below the center console, allowing one to see the screen, and inputing the sound through the tape deck and a tape adapter. I burned all my MP3s to a pair of DVDs and have all my music, as well as CD player and DVD player capability for the longer trips. I grew into what I have, and I adapted to what I have.
Maybe I just always see the lighter side of things, but who cares who is paying for it. As long as the kid is happy, grateful, and comprehends the responsibility and unique opportunity they have been given, then just be happy for him/her.
I know I am. Good luck on the 8!

I think every teen's first car should be a 25hp Volvo with Nerf bumpers and 50 airbags until they're 20. Okay, that's exagerating and I personally know some teens right now whom I consider perfectly responsible so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
I believe there is more to think about with the RX-8 than with most standard cars. If you're into the rotary engine and willing to read up on the car (there's lots to learn right here on the forum) then I think you'll really enjoy an RX-8. If you're not interested in popping the hood on any car (oil change? change it into what?) then the RX-8 is probably not for you. The RX-8 isn't a bad car or a maintenance nightmare, but if you just want to turn the key and drive it every day without thinking about it, well, we've seen owners like that post their dissatisfaction here.
Actually, I have a very high opinion of the safety features of the RX-8. The DSC is excellent - folks post stories of it savings their butts (and cars) all the time. I think the crush zones and airbags protect the occupants better than many other vehicles on the road. If you want a selling point for your parents research the RX-8s safety features and hit them pretty hard. Search back through the old threads and find some of the accident stories and pictures.
In fact, if I had my choice of a teenager losing control of his vehicle and hitting me with an RX-8 or an Expedition, well, it's simply a matter of physics.
I've got no beef with parents buying a car - mine bought me a used vehicle in good condition when I turned 16 (mostly for their own convenience - "drive yourself to school!"). I'm more concerned with the values the teen learns about owning, maintaining and responsibly using a vehicle than how they got it in the first place. We have several responsible teens on this forum who enjoy their RX-8s (although I never knew Raptor2k was 17 - he posts like a well spoken adult).
Read, ask, learn - enjoy the forum. Hope you find what you need here.

nicely said KBD, im impressed by Raotor2k also. damn I thought I was amongst the youngest here at 23 years old and finishing up college... the maturaty of some of you younger ones are pretty impressive. and it also explains why some are very immature. i dont think it takes anything away from us if our parents has the ability to help us and are willing to. my dad paid cash for my car, but im paying 400 a month to pay him back and paying my own insurance and gas. I just feel like it dosnt matter how old you are, you can be 50 years old and be an immature ***** at the same time.

Trust funds???? LOL
One of my friends has millions in a trust fund, as well as is an international investment banker, so he makes tons of money. He has a Mercedes (don't know which model or features, cost over $200,000) which he calls his sensible business car, a Porsche Carrera (don't know which model of features, paid around $700,000 for it), He has a Ferarri Spider (the roadster one, custom built, custom interior and custom paint job, cost in the mid $200,000 range), and he has a yellow RX-8.
His favorite of those in order are:
1. Ferarri.
2. RX-8.
3. Porsche.
4. Mercedes.
Of course, he loves his sister's BMW except for the fact that it is pink with white leather interior!!!!
His reason for liking the RX-8 over the Porsche is that it shifts better and handles a little better. He also said it is a lot quieter.

Might be jealousy buying. He is a sports car nut!!! He is actually more settled in one location now instead of moving every few months. Since he moved back to where he is from he is now collecting busily collecting cars. His dad also collects cars, so I think he is just trying to keep up with him!!! LOL
Must be nice to have money to just go out and buy anything you want without having to worry about whether or not you can actually afford it!!!

And, anyone that thinks the Rx8 handles better than a CGT, quite frankly, is the most incompetent of drivers.
EDIT: I looked up the 2005 Forbes most expensive cars. The most expensive car on the list was not even 650,000 dollars. The Carrera GT, as it always has been, costs 440,000 dollars. I have to wonder who would do business with an investment banker who pays 300,000 dollars more than a car is worth.
