RX-8 Versus an STI
#76
Kart Racer,
I have never driven an STi but I own an EVo which is very close to the STI and I also own an RX8 with a Turbo and Mazda Speed suspension. The RX8 stock can not compare to the performance of the STi or EVO it is has a better seating position and is a better daily driver but as far as perfromance. It can not compare. now if you strap on a Turbo with the a mazda speed suspension you will spank an STI and an unmodded EVO as well. Stock you do not have a chance twisties or straightways I don't care what anyone says. But hey The RX8 is a better looking care inside and out you won't get that econ care feel that in the EVO or STi..

I have a blast in the snow with the RX-8... I can pull off some pretty wicked slow-speed drifts now that I've been in this area through two winters. The part that sucks is having to dig it out but that's not too often here.

The sti's and evo's are nice, the thing that kept me from buying them was the ridiculous insurance rate, would of been over $4000 a year, the rx is only $1500. They also seem to be pretty fragile with many dealers just voiding the warranties for stupid but expensive fixes.

I second that. Besides the fact that I have summer tires on my car in winter (stupid) , I was confident enough to take it to the gym one night about a month ago. I thought that the weather had cleared up for a few days and the snow was off the streets. Well, on my way home it started snowing, and it got really bad and it was that wet kind of snow, so I ended up having to park the car on the side of the road on some back street because it wouldn't even move a foot. After that I had to run home through a blizzard.
All in all the snow sucks.
After that I took our Impreza (sadly not an STI) to go check on the 8 and had no problems getting around.

i have both a 04 rx8 and an 05 STi stock for stock or modded for modded the rx8 will never be a STi straight roads or not the STi hands down better car any category maybe exept interior but who cares

However, and no offense, but the RX-8 is better on one hand because it is not a granny car with a big engine in it. It was built right of the bat as a sports car and not an Impreza with more umph.

Cost about the same?!?
You will find the RX deeply discounted while the STi never is so in reality the STi is always several $K more.
The biggest problem with the STi is the econ car roots and the boy racer image but the insurance will also kill you. On the plus side the car is the best performer for the buck, has excellent reliability, AWD, and good MPG for the performance level. The looks also grow on you.

I am 18, the insurance kills me no matter what I would think a sedan would be cheaper though.
That is a good point however, I have never seen (speaking used) a nice STI that was as cheap as an RX-8 and I think the new one I looked at the other day was priced at about 37k.

Don't forget the car was bread for rallying. Racing was not an afterthought for that car. It's still a drivers car, and that's including the base model Impreza. Having owned a WRX for the last three years I can attest to that.

Here is my 2cents: stock for stock the Sti will own the RX8 anyone that can drive a little bit will destroy your RX8 no how good you drive in a stock RX8 Take it from me I have an RX8 and an EVO I assume the Evo handles very much like the STI How ever the MS suspension significantly reduces that body roll and changes the RX8 into what it should have been stock. Even without FI you will be able to take corners at a much faster speed then the STI. Now couple that with a turbo on the RX8, changes the RX8 into a monster. Not only will you be able to power out of corners much faster which means you will leave the STI you can aggressivly pull on the straight aways which has always been the RX8 problem on the track. But sorry stock for stock you don't have a chance

As for insurance, too many people wrapping STI's around trees and rolling them.
The RX8 has the better chassis and balance. The STI has the advantage with the power and the awd.
PS, Can we kill the person who revived this thread?
