Hornet- how do you rate the brakes on the EVO compared to the 8?
IMHO they are very close in braking! You can have someone kissing the windshield in either!

my what a huge thread I started.

wasn't trying to start a war. i just really wondered what 8 owners thought of the EVO and I was hoping to find some people who have owned or driven both to give me their opinions.

i know the basic differences. it's always informative to see what others think..especially from those who have spent seat time in each.

the EVO is no doubt a hard core performance car. brutal power and amazing grip.

the 8 I drove was piles of fun. i'll have to get some more seat time in each and see which i really like more.

It really depends on you! Honestly...in the aspect of performance I preferred the Evo. In the aspect of comfort and features I prefer the 8. If you are one of the seemingly rare few like myself who actually like both then it is a hard choice! There are a lot of other angles to look at such as are you into aftermarket performance or even aftermarket audio. Do you plan on driving in inclement weather! Are you comfortable with a rotary? For me I had an '88 RX-7 so I already had a love for the rotary and a little familiarity of what to expect.

Too funny man. Ike, you are the fanbois king! In this thread alone you must of had nearly 50 plus posts praising your Evo. So you admit that the Evo lacks creature comforts or has a stiff ride...really? What other news is Ike gonna break? Liberace is gay? No way!!

You seem like a smart enough guy otherwise, sure you're an *** but so am I. But you actually said the Evo only "resembles" a Lancer.

from car and driver VIR lightning lap

"The Mazda RX-8 turned 3:19.0, 1.9 seconds quicker than the Mustang, and the two cars were as different as steak and sushi. The rotary engine lacked punch coming out of the corners, even when we freely used its 9000-rpm capability. Its maximum straightaway speed was only 116.4 mph — 2.9 mph below the Mustang’s and even slower than the Cobalt SS’s. On the other hand, the RX-8’s taut suspension provided great body control and excellent cornering balance. Its brakes were powerful and fade-free. It turned in with sharp precision, and you could use power to rotate the car toward a corner apex. The sector times show how much the RX-8 liked the corners.

The Mitsubishi Evo MR was another excellent-handling car. It also had the benefit of serious power, achieving 124.0 mph on the straight. These virtues were supplemented by plenty of grip and tremendous stability. The Evo managed to combine quick turn-in behavior with a nicely planted feel in the corners. Its steering was precise, and the Evo’s highly supportive seat made it a driver favorite. We would like to see less fade in its brakes, but there was enough stopping power to put together at least one good lap per session, and the best of those was clocked at 3:13.5.

In the LL1 class, only the Nissan 350Z could beat that time, with a best lap of 3:12.5. The 350Z was as gutsy as the Evo, and its thrust was of the naturally aspirated variety with, naturally, no turbo lag. That made it possible to feed in power much more precisely — and earlier — when exiting corners. The Z-car’s handling was not quite as buttoned down as the Evo’s, and the Nissan demanded a more precise driving style. But its smooth power delivery worked well with fine handling balance to allow genuine power oversteer when necessary to tighten the car’s line. Long live the king of LL1!"

im a bit suprized that the 350 did so well.

thanks man.. but that car doesnt belong to me. im thinking about buying one though. the car was weighed at 1670lbs (i think) with 332AWHP so its hard to resist. especially since the owner has spent under 20K and is about to boost the HP to around 400awhp. the entire motor/drivetrain swap only took us 3 hours too!

I don't really want to get into your pissing contest but I don't think you have really read up on the development process of an Evo from the assembly line! Before I got mine I did quite a bit of reading on it and I promise you that you absolutely cannot make a regular Lancer into an Evo! The development starts as early as the bare frame! So his comment actually is not fanboi based but fact based!

That is what VIR looks like, you need HP to survive. The track in Top Gear is much smaller and shorter, I dont think they even hit 110.

The current EVO has no side airbags and I refuse to drive a car w/o them. The new one will change that though.

You'd go with a highly strung lancer as a daily driver over the rx8 (which has a better interior and better ride quality)?

I'm guessing most people would have the rx8 as the daily driver and the EVO as the weekend boy racer car ...

I've seen a FQ400 hand a Carrera GT it's ***. That's not bad for an Evo "econobox" over a 450K supercar.

I have those same lights on my lawnmower. That way I can cut the grass at 2 am with no problems.

I got a chance to sit in an MR at a recent autoshow (the had a new 08 GTS on a spinner and it looked good). When you see it in person and walk around it it’s not a bad looking vehicle. Not particularly pretty but purposeful. Those recaros are friggin awesome and while the interior is basic it didn’t appear bad when I sat in it. It’s the lack of airbags that took it off my possible list. Not that it was high up there anyway.

Back to the OP, go out and testdrive and see what you like, that is the only way, make the best choice for you.

i can't believe this thread hit 12 pages.... wow....

i probably will go out and test drive an EVO sometime soon. I may try the STi too. they are kind of the same thing...different brand..same type of car. four door turbo rally rockets...

I'd like to find a Mitsu dealer in the same area as the Mazda dealer.and take the same fun twisty roads..do it back to back... before I forget what it's like... you drive a car on one weekend, anothe rone the next weekend, and it's very hard to compare.

I was NOT aware that the current evo lacks side airbags. that sucks. i want a fun car, but i'd also like SOME degree of safety.

my S60R was about as safe as you can get in a sporty car.... but that car had to go. i really want somethign lighter and more tossable. if I could have anythign, heck, i might get an S2000...but I really don't want only 2 seats. i have kids...and while I *could* get an S2000 as a third car...and keep my current beater sedan for to/from work... i really don't want three cars. the RX8 would give me the feel ofa two seater....but with the ability to shuttle th ekids around if I needed to.

one drawback to the EVO...is that I"m one of those people who has this constant need/desire to MOD cars. I always am thinking fo somethign to buy for the car, exhaust, springs, sway bars, strut bars, etc etc.. My S60R was pretty modified...and I spent a fair amount of $$ on it... and now that I sold it...I sort of wish I had done a lot less to it. I'd have more $$ in the bank... I promised my wife that the next car I would leave STOCK... she laughed at me and said "yeah right" cause she knows that i'll want to mod something.... and yeah...I'll tint the windows, do clear corner lenses... but if I had an EVO...OMFG... I'd want to do a turbo back exhaust, flash the ECU, and add more power...i'd be adding a boost gauge...i'd want to do all that stuff to it..and on an EVO...jsut a turbo back and flash can change it from a 13 second car to a high 12 second car.... big big gains.

the Rx8 on the other hand...is the kind of car that you CAN mod...but honestly..you're not gonna get big gains outo f it..you could do sways , strut bars...and probably get nice gains in handling...but really...you could add $2000 in intake/exhaust/flywheel...and have a car that is really not *that* much faster than stock...and for someone like me..who is trying to resist the urge to mod..and just buy it and enjoy it....the 8 might be a safe choice. i could do some cheapy things...like strut bars, tint.... but the urge to add a cat back might not be there b/c i know it really won't add any power... not much...not to justifhy the $$ and hassle from the wife.. wheras the EVO.... me buying an EVO and saying I won't mod it...would be like giving a crack addict a torch and crack pipe....and then tell them not to go look for crack.... you get the idea...

besides, the 8 was FUN FUN FUN. and i've had rotaries. i had a 79 RX and I had a 87 Turbo II. both fun cars..but they blew motors..

funny thing.. when I test drove the rX8 I felt this buzz in the shifter...and it was deja vu.... i remembered my 79 RX7 buzzing the exact same way.... i had totally forgotten aboutg it.... but the 8 did it the same way. mazda thing? rotary thing? i liked it..reminded me of my old 7.... which was my very first car when i turned 16.... not a bad car for a 16 year old eh?? yeah it was used and had 85k miles on it...but it was clean, and ..guess what.. I modded it... RB headers..exhaust, ported motor...suspension... oh yeah...EVERY car i've owned since age 16 has been tinkered with.... i'm trying to stop the insanity...

so the 8 might be a good choice... and maybe i'm just hopeless and i'll get an RX8 and wind up wthi a greddy turbo kit.... aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhh
