RX-8s without rotaries?
I doubt it myself. I was eating with some buddies yesterday, when a kid I knew walked in and said what's up. We talked for a bit, and he congratulated me on the 8 which he hadn't seen yet.
Anyways, he told me a story about how he went to the Mazda dealership in Oxnard and the salesman told him not to look at a particular fleet of 8s they had because they were "1.4 liters, with one rotary and 4 cylinders".
Personally, I think that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. He was dead serious; totally convinced that some 04 RX-8s weren't even real rotary engines. I think this kid is a total moron, what about you guys? I've never heard anything about this before...

I don't think that the kid is an idiot. I think that the salesman said it.
Lots of Mazda salesmen have been known to say that the 8 has a 4 cylinder or a 6. This one seems to be trying to rationalize the word rotary with his sub-primate intelligence understanding of engines, "duh, all engines gots cylinders."
The last RX that I heard of having a piston powered engine was back in the 70's in the first gen. RX7.

Their program doesn't allow for a non-piston driven engine. Some programs will list cylinders as 0, and some list it as 4 because 0 isn't a permitted option. Outside of a wankel engine their are only a couple of turbine powered cars [and I mean a couple of experimental cars not models] which fall outside of the piston engine model. Even steam cars have pistons.

My agent's secretary was choking on it for a minute, until the actual agent, whom I've been with for over 25 years, walked out and after we exchanged pleasantries, he dealt with it quickly. He knows all about rotaries; he and his brother (whom I've known even longer) are into sports cars. Lucky for me...

The state of Georgia had the 8 in their emissions testing system as a 2-cyl as well. It made it impossible to pass last year...hope they have it fixed for 2008.
This thread reminds me of a reverse situation I once encountered. A friend of my brother-in-law claimed to have spent thousands having 'an RX7 turbo engine' installed in his Miata. "This I gotta see," I thought and asked him to pop the hood. Unless they mounted the 13B sideways, added unnecessary cams, and figured out a way to put the spark plugs in a row, that was no rotary under his hood.
He seemed so proud of this "RX7 engine"...I hadn't the heart to point out the obvious.

What is about the phrase "brother-in-law" that lowers the ensuing discourse, no matter how far removed from the brother-in-law himself, about 20 IQ points.
Nice Alfa GT Am in your profile!
