LOL I'm sorry but you just can't compare these two cars. As much as I love the RX-8, the Cayman S is just in a totally different league...
With the Porsche, you are getting heritage, badge, status, better looks (though subjective), more power, torque, quality, and SO much more.
You and I both know that the RX-8 does not make 232 horsepower. Weight distribution and stopping distances are meaningless in comparison to the FEEL of a car. Having the perfect balance (MR), the engine making noise right behind your head, and just driving a Porsche all contribute to it.
Some of you guys mention a 300HP RX-8 being better than a Cayman S. While you may be faster, speed isn't necessarily the only measure of how "good" a car is. A $5000 turbo civic can easily smoke a Cayman S, but isn't "better" than one.
Even if you compare a Ferrari 360 Modena to an NSX. One is twice the price of the other and they offer the same feel, but the NSX is faster around a track. At the end of the day, one is driving a Ferrari, and one is driving a Honda...

If you want to compare cars then you need to go test drive the Cayman - the differences will quickly become apparent.

Heritage: unimportant, what is important is where the car stands today.
Badge: come on give me a break, buying a car for the badge is sad. Really it is.
Status: same thing here, buying a car for status is to scream out to the world that you are a sad sad person.
Looks: Very important, i like the RX-8 looks better than the Porsche. Others think differently. I can only be happy I'm in love with the looks of a cheaper car.
More power: Granted there is more power which is nice.
Torque: Well yes it usually goes hand in hand with power unless the revs are insane
Quality: Yes its a notch or two higher in the Porsche but the quality of the RX-8 is not bad at all.
And so much more: I'm sorry, not being a Porsche guy i dont see all that more.
In Sweden there are more Porsches by far on the road than RX-8s (The RX-8 is ultra rare in Sweden. In 4 years i have seen 5 RX-8s on the streets) keeping the appeal of the car much better than the Porsche.
People are really reacting like: Yeah thats just another Porsche but they really react to the RX-8 to the extent that when you stop and fuel up or at the store people come up and talk with you asking about the car.
All I'm trying to say is that the RX-8 beats any Porsche Boxter or Cayman in my world

The Cayman S, as you know, is close to 300 hp.
As far as some of the other things you mentioned, I agree - I like the appearance of the Cayman better - I think it's gorgeous.
I'm not so certain that quality in the Porsche is better than the Mazda - in fact, Consumer Reports has demonstrated Porsche has been struggling with reliability issues.
And the strength of the euro versus the dollar or yen adds expense to the Cayman right off the top.
I think the RX8 is extremely competitive with base Cayman by any measure, and beats it in many other aspects.

You guys think people in the market for a Porsche Caymen even consider a Mazda RX-8?
Yea, and I am sure when you guys bought your rx-8 you also considered buying a Hyundai.

I specifically stated the base Cayman.

You should write R&T and ask them to do a comparison between the RX8 and the Cayman for all those buyers having trouble deciding between the two...

Well, I haven't driven the Cayman, but, based on looks, I'd definitely take the RX8--especially one with something like the Mazdaspeed bodykit.
Of course, I've never really been a fan of 911-style Porsche's.
I wonder if the Cayman is taking away a lot of sales from the more expensive Porsche models since you get the looks for substantially less cash?

I can't stand the Caymann. Porsche intentionally built it to be slower than a 911, when in actuality it could be faster. One of the most notable failings is the omission of a decent differential, because with one it could out-handle a Carrera. The reason the RX8 can keep up at half the price is because Porsche built it to fit in their model range, not to be an awesome sports car. Then they decided to charge corvette money for it, because they're Porsche and the badge and "heritage" are worth 20 grand.

I haven't checked the forum in a while and the first two threads I see are the RX8 vs {insert Porsche/Honda/Nissan here} argument and a gas mileage thread. Wow. Now I know how members who have been around for a few years must feel.

however quality wise, there is no game
the porsche is a whole 'nother ball game. And it is definately far more focused and dedicated than the 8 (though some might debate that is a + for the 8)
a next gen rx7 would be a far better competitor.
