Talking AT Rx8 Can't Drift... I don't think so!

Allright long story short... I decided to let my friend drive my Rx8 which is an NA 04 AT since he wanted to see what it was like since the last time he drove it when I had a blown engine. We decided to go to an empty parking lot because we were both curious as to whether or not it had enough power to drift. People on the forum have been saying that it isn't possible on dry pavement since there isn't enough power. Well, we proved this wrong even with my Potenza RE01R's which aren't very worn and are plenty sticky. He always talks about my car as underpowered and slow so we both thought it wouldn't drift well. He left it in first and we went around a turn, then he floored it and countersteered, which made an amazing drift which was very smooth. He and I were both very impressed since I didn't think this car had the ability, only the MT's. BTW DSC and TCS were off. Now he doesn't underestimate the car any more.

Just wanted to prove a myth false by many nonbelievers here. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics or videos, but may let him do it again some time to get some footage. We only did this two times so it didn't hurt the car.

Just to clarify, it was definately a drift, and not just a powerslide.

Why do you say that? I am just trying to prove a point, not start a debate or flame war.

Allright. I get what you mean. I hope it doesn't turn out that way, since I went into detail about how it occured.

Trust me. I know the difference between a drift and a powerslide. What I believe we did was go around the turn fast which kicked the back end out a little then my friend countersteered, which initiated the drift. I will verify the exact procedure with him tomorrow.

That is a drift though. I guess a video is in order. Next time I attempt it, a video will be taken and then posted.

If your so good, then why don't you prove it through a video? No need to be an ******* about it. I'm just trying to prove a point that an AT is more capable than people here think.

Never said I'm good, nor do i have an AT to even attempt it to put it on video.

I'm not being an *******, you're just being defensive. not hating on the auto, just saying any 8 can oversteer out of a turn, including the 8... which is what you did. You've proven the auto 8 can slip out its rear, a point that is probably well known here.

My friend knows what drifting looks like since he does it in BMW's all the time. I have gotten it to oversteer out of turns myself many times, but never gotten to be able to countersteer like he did. I am not trying to be defensive, I am just saying we both truly believe it was a drift since we have both seen it done by pro's.

I know. Do it in an MT then. Just to see your definition of one.

So you really think pros understeer in, oversteer out?

you must've missed the part about me never saying I could do it
watch any of keichi tsuchiya's videos, especially in his ae86.

well if you and your friend are satisfied in thinking oversteer + countersteer = drift then good for you. just don't compare your oversteer adventure with pros drifting.

next time, set up some cones.
if you can manage to "drift" into a corner well before the apex and manage to come out of it into another turn without slowing to a halt, i'll be happily surprised.

more than likely, you'll just be oversteering on the exit of the corner... which any 8 can do.

Anyways, I feel my ricer level increased about 50% so I won't argue further.

Break traction and show angle prior to apex then we'll talk of driftoz!

I bet it was a good feeling realizing you could bring that rear out though!

The AT will drift. Just get her into the torque peak and off she goes.
