RX8 Engine price increase
Just out of curiosity,
last December i quoted a new engine from the dealer and he game me a quote of about 2k for a new engine. I called again today and they are now at 3500k+!!!he advised that this happened withing the last month or so, what in the world happen did i miss the memo?? for people that are out of the 100k warranty owing a Rx8 just got a bit more expensive ( worst case scenario ). anyone want to share some insight on this price jump??

There is no known reason, but yes, the increase happened in late September.
Realistically though, the original price was probably too low. Considering the new engine production has been shut down for some time, a price hike has been long over-due.

i have a feeling the $2000 list price was because Mazda was their own customer, IE most of the engines were being replaced under warranty.
and since the 2006's are now out of the 8/100 warranty, maybe demand is down too?
prices on individual engine parts (apex seals, rotor housings) haven't changed.

Depends on the reason for failure, how far gone the engine is, and how much is replaceable. At that reman price, I'd be looking around for rebuild options first, as long as it wasn't a shattered seal or a coolant seal failure, or an engine that was over ~80k.

Makes complete sense,

the reman is quicker/easier, but you get better QC doing it yourself (its also pretty neat)
the only way its cheaper to rebuild is if you have a low mile engine that has some specific problem, like a bad water seal or something.

all the seals are about $1500, plus two rotor housings, which is another $1200, plus the gasket kit, its about the same.

I just bought a Reman engine from Mazda, its shipped from Canada directly to my house (for whatever reason)
I haven't install it yet cuz it's for friends overseas, 4 port at, I didn't break the engine apart, but from what I can tell, it's pretty much brand new for everything, it also comes with another complete gasket set, a thermostat for god knows why. Oh it also comes with a counter weight, probably installed it so dirt can't go in.
does it worth it? assume it's not DoA (no way to tell) then I would say it's worth it, cuz new parts cost more than getting this (assume the engine is made with completely brand new parts vs getting all brand new parts on your own)

Coolant seal failures are very common on street driven 8s, because people don't maintain their cooling systems, and a slight failure pops them in a hurry. They can fail as low as 220F, and your temp gauge won't start moving till 235F+. It's not a good receipe. If a coolant seal failure is caught right away, the engine is pulled and torn down, then there shouldn't be any lasting damage from the coolant. Otherwise, the coolant is going to be eating through stuff.

A shattered seal is uncommon on N/A street driven 8s. Very common on race only 8s and 8s with forced induction.

every reman engine comes with a thermostat, its just with the Rx8 you can't install the thermostat because of the alternator bracket, so they just toss it in the box with the install gasket set.
you can of course imagine the engine that overheats because of a failed thermostat, and then the next nine engines that fail the same way because nobody thought to change it

$3300 didnt sound bad. I hear local dealers near St. Louis are quoting $6k+ plus to put in a reman.
