RX8 as a first car

It is mentally impossible for a brand new driver to know the limits of any new car, let alone a sports car.
Do yourself a favor, buy something cheap with a little zip to get that speed bug out of your system. Then when you have matured enough as a driver and you have a nice car, it will be all the better. You're never going to be able to truly appreciate the 8 if its your first car.
If you want to buy an RX-8 just to show off you are gonna be severely disappointed. Sure it looks good, but you have to truly love the 8 to put up with its little annoyances and live with it day to day.
tl;dr
No I don't think the 8 is a good first car. Also I think your parents are crazy for thinking about spending $25k on a car for a brand new 16 year old driver.

Ahhhh, give it a year or two. The 8 will go the path of the rx-7s and it'll be down hill from there. I think the only reason so many are still on the road "not to sure about that either, I don't see many around here, " is because of the warrenty that the dealers give you.
People are selling thier 8s after the 100,000 miles mark, from what I can see on craigslists anyways. Or they realize that they don't want a 17mpg sports car, that will probably lose in a drag race to that Accord your speaking so lowly of. Don't get me wrong though, up in the canyon/twisties, you'll probably spank em Which is of course, is assuming you don't crash the 8 in the first place.
You say you'll be careful, but come on... I'm still in that stage of my life, " Whats the worst that can happen," kind of mentality. But I have common rotary sense "from owning an rx-7, For example. I've already installed an oil temp, water temp, and oil pressure gauge on my 8. Did you know that the gauges on the 8 now are jsut dummy gauges? Meaning that the temp gauge only has 3 levels... Off, On, and "You are so f**ked lawlz."
What I'm trying to say is... Don't look so lightly into this matter. Trust me, having another rotary enthusiast is great, But if your going to abuse it or wrap it around a telephone pole somewhere, your going to hate it. And only add to the BS that is " rotary motors are crap, and not as reliable as blah blah blah,"
And if your gf is going to judge you on the car that you drive, I would dump that harlet right then and there, no offense of course But whatever decision you make, don't make your parents regret thier decision.

Why the forums are saying you're going to crash your car is because you don't have limits defined and your reasoning seems a bit illogical for driving a nice sports car.
Just go for a test drive of the WRX, rx8, accord, Lamborghini, or w/e your parents are going to get ya and find the car that fits your style.
With that being said, you can buy my Winning Blue rx8 for 20 grand. lewl.

Get whatever you want as your first car, honestly. But do not make mommy and daddy pay for it. I can't stand that. I think paying for your first car yourself teaches responsibility and respect for the car (reducing the risk of going 100mph into a tree or blowing an engine).
My RX8 was paid for with all my own money, hard earned from working two jobs and I take such good care of it as a result.

No.
You'll get it, and find out stuff that you'll be like "What the ****, that's kinda dumb" and then get this idea that all cars will be like that forever. And then you'll come on these forums and complain about the acceleration problems, flooding it, etc.
It is not a good first car.
I had a brand new 2004 RX8 when I was 16. I sold it when I was 17.
Don't fall into conformity of High School and all the cool kids have cool cars. You'll be struggling with the car more than getting poon.

lol nah dude, an 8 is an 8, but only get a manual if your really into cars etc. it would be a shame to see you get a manual then get rid of it because you hated shifting, i got mine for free as it was from someone in my family, but i cant hate because it was for free...
Holy ****.. are people really that lazy these days? Shifting is second nature!

The RX8 was my first car and is still my current car. Had it since August 2003. I have been very satisifed with it from learning on it, as well as continuuing to enjoy it as a seasoned driver today. I feel like it has forgiven a lot of abuse from me in the early years, and I will definitely make it up to it in its future years.
It gets my thumbs up!

I'm 16 and my rx8 was my first car. i got it 3 days after my license and love it! however, my advice is don't get an 04. They give the most problems. Plus the rx8 you have to fill up every 2 days.. you cant drive in normal D if you have an auto. It's not possible. Fill up oil every 2 weeks...I cut off my cat couple days ago and saw it was broken. i shoot some nice flames with the stock catback, removed resonators and cat with a cool Cold air intake.. Get a 08 civic Si. Friends got it. loves it. no problems at all. plus you get the reliability of a warranty

My 93 honda accord was a fantastic first car. Lots of space in the trunk, reliable as a tank, reasonably safe, not seductively powerful, fantastic gas mileage.
I think everyone's first car should be a beater. You WILL hit something as a new driver, and it's better to accidentally smash in your front fender on a car you don't care much about rather then a beautiful shiny new 8.

Who says the Rx8 doesnt have enough power... I can easily Drift my 8 anytime i feel like it, Slides like a beauty but on the other hand as a first car get a civic, once you learn more get something with more power... May find you like FWD over RWD. Its all about preference, and skill. Doesnt every highschool kid have a civic that they "Imagine" is fast anyway?
