I'd imagine that the 8 wouldn't make for the best of car to drift in...if for some odd reason you really wanted to in the first place...

 

 

i dont think high performance cars are good for first cars. my car is a 97 4 door honda civic, its so slow i cant even imagine trying to race it (although i did race my friends crappy civic once but it was 2 am and no one was around). i think its better to start with a slower less disirable car. i managed to not get any speeding tickets or accidents (not including bumping into **** in my garage).

im 18 now and im looking to buy an rx-8 after i get out of navy basic training in december sorta like a reward to myself (and a way to spend my money while i sit in navy school then on a boat). i think the car will feel more mine when i buy it with my money and will lead me to be even more responsible (i still gotta learn to drive manual AT is boring).

 

I just turned 16 last week, and I was surprised/ in shock to find my MT 8 parked in the driveway. It's an unbeleivable car and drives great. Obviously it would help to be an experienced driver, but anyone can learn how to drive this car. I highyl recommend it

Man, reading these posts about all these teenagers with RX-8s and others (X5s, etc) make me feel like my parent jipped me when they let me have my sisters '92 Saturn for my first car. As if owning this car didnt encourage OCD anyway, buy it with your own money and you can say goodbye to your girlfriend/boyfriend cause you wont time for them anymore

Just don't get foolish and think it'll handle as well in the snow or rain as it does on dry pavement.

 

Guys I think your looking at this the wrong way.

In todays world, any object can kill anyone.

A house can fall on someone. A man can fall in the sewer. SO it's not about the object. It's about the person.

If you give a redneck a gun. And tell him not to shoot it. He will say ok. But as soon as you walk away, you'll hear things "gettin blasted up".

If you give a elderly woman a gun, and tell her not to shoot it. I'm pretty sure she wont shoot it.

The gun could be a mini revolver, the gun could be a Colt M4a1. Doesnt matter. It's in the persons hands.

Ugo, or Ferrari, Miata, or RX8. If someone's going to get into an accident you certainly cannot blame the car. You blame lack of attention, or plain old bad driving skills.

You blame the driver.

So to the threead creator. Evaluate your driving skills, and your personality. Are you an anxious person? Are you a defensive driver? Are you someone with a heavy foot? Utlimately, you have to discipline yourself.

I saw a guy pull a Ferrari Enzo out of a parking lot and proceed up the blvd. He babied it. Never going over 25 mph.

Sure it can do 220mph, but he doesnt ALWAYS have to drive it that way.

ALot of things factor in to this being a good first car, but as always, it comes down to the driver. Don't be a crazy redneck.

 

^ That is irrelevant. Anyone with NO experience has no idea what it's like. There is no substitute for experience -- not even fancy personality tests. If you get a rear-wheel drive sports car as your first car you are going to be more likely to get in an accident when it rains. You have got to take it easy at first and learn where the car's limits are because it's harder for a young driver to recover from problems when dealing with a rear-wheel drive car. Add to that fact that it's a FAST rear-wheel drive car and it compounds the issue.

 

experience and maturity.

• experience to be able to handle odd situations (which happen to everyone)
• maturity to use the power in an appropriate manner.

neither of which can be purchased, or hurried, or transferred from one person to another. this is probably the main reason people are saying "don't get it as your first car."

there is a difference between exploiting the power of a machine and appreciating the power.

Experience? Hardly.

When I got my first car and I was 16 I knew I wanted to go fast, so I did, and ended up flipping the thing into a ditch.

When my friend Richard got his first car, he babied it everywhere.

It's not about experience. It's about the person. There's no way around it. It's fact.

 

I amend my statement to agree with RSD -- experience and maturity.

Do you even know what the word "fact" means? So far all I know about you is that you've flipped a car into a ditch and that your linguistic skills are questionable at best -- why would anyone take car safety tips from you?

 

I've noticed that a lot of the really expensive cars or exotic car drivers around me are VERY careful drivers. I prefer to have them follow behind me as opposed to just about anyone else. They don't follow too closely or stop too closely behind you. They seem to always use their turn signals (from what I have experienced). They seem to be paying extremely close attention to all the traffic around them. I've noticed they also tend to drive a little bit slower than the rest of the traffic. I'm sure this doesn't apply to everyone, but this has been when I have encountered on my way to and from work.

Sure, they bought high-powered, fast cars but they aren't out racing around like idiots.
