Is the RX8 gas cap supposed to be On loosely?
Just had my first gas refill in my 8. Unlike other cars, the gas cap "clicks" a couple times and it just rotates over and over without seeming to fit snuggly and tightly on there. On other cars, this would lead to CEL. Is this normal with the 8s?

Yes, all gas caps rotates. Let me rephrase the question. Compare to others, this "new" cap feels extraordinarily "loose," enough to not pressurize the gas tank. This will cause CEL to come on in other cars.

im know my 8's gas cap like the back of my hand.
if it feels "extraordinary loose" and seems an issue, i cannot help you. sorry, but havent felt yours, nor have i heard of that problem before.

I had the TSB done on my 06' and it feels looser than the original but it is working fine....... The part of the cap that seals on the filler tube does seal tight. The top of the cap just rotates a little to freely for a lot of people. Remember when gas caps didn't click? everyone thought the new ones that did were broken. hehehe

Sorry to jump on with this but ... the gas cap has a plastic cord on it but can the cap be attached to the lid somehow when you pump gas? Mine always leans against the car and I'm dying to know if it can be held on the lid somehow.

And to the original post. Yeah, you will get a cel if not a good seal as others have said, but when you put the cap on, turn it until it clicks about two or three times and leave it alone. If no cel, then don't worry about it. Not to be a dick about it(okay, I will be), but it's on page 3-19 and 3-20 of my manual.....do you have a manual? If not, then go get one at www.mazdausa.com and read it. Maybe you'll find out about the mysterious trunk handle as well.

Separately, there is a problem with some RX-8 gas caps going on loose and tripping the CEL. There's a TSB on this with a revised, better fitting cap. But again, if you're not getting a CEL, your gas cap is fine.

I know exactly what you mean—all the cars I've had over the last several years—a GTI and two MX-5s—allow you to keep clicking the gas cap forever, but the RX-8 is the only one that feels loose. I've wondered if mine was normal, too. But don't worry—it is. As others have said, if you don't get a CEL, it's fine. Mine goes on loosely with no CEL, so it's fine.

Only problem with the hook is that when my friends see it, they tend to roll their eyes and say the cap is plastic and will not scratch the paint.
But it does tend to make them more consciencious about wiping their feet before getting in the car, and more careful with their drinks and boogers. One of those "Don't mess with the **** lunatic" deals.

I found the little latch that protrudes off the inner part of the assembly (terrible description) but it's on the right side opposite to the side the plastic cord extends from so the cap and cord have to be pulled across to that side. I don't like the position so I will just continue to use care and let it dangle. But I always shake the gas nozzle in case there's excess gas and hold a paper towel under it during and after filling so as to not spill gas on the car. Little things ...

Enough other cars and pumps do this, so it's usually a good idea to not stand in line with the filler.
