What I meant was check the current GTI's and Jettas reliability to see how they are faring.

And that 5000 number... there are 5000 MS3's and my dealer has had the same 2 cosmic blue micas sitting there for MONTHS.

Does the VW come with a gay pride sticker? haha im j/k I hate VWs but the R32 is probably the only VW I can tolerate. They look pretty nice on the inside, have good performance, but it looks too much like a box on wheels to me. The big worry to me about VW's are they have mad problems. Everyone I know who has or had VWs has dumped thousands into them even newer model VWs. My girlfriends transmission went at 71K and the water pump broke at 80K. I'm begging her to get rid of the thing. Just be careful they have a long history of breaking and they aren't the easiest things to work on.

AWD is cool but I'd still take the MS3 and use the 10 grand I saved on mods, football tickets, hookers, and asparagus.

mm i like the ms3 a lot...im just not a huge fan of FF... and about the reliability...im getting similar things on actual VW forums =o that cant be good news. lol

I am thankful for one thing about owning a the 2002 1.8t jetta I have, I love beating people on the street who think it will be an easy kill and also since I have to work on the car so much I pretty much know how to fix 80% of the problems the car throws my way. Best way to learn to repair and build a car is to have it break down on you.

Also that little stock turbo I have takes a beating and still pushing strong (Knock on RX-8, no wood present) Though my exhaust is having backpressure issues, (Too much back pressure so I need a new custom Turboback exhaust, but why get it if Im trying to get rid of it?)

ok...u guys have sucessfully changed my mind in keeping my 8. just came back from the gas station. i swore it spoke to me and said. "please keep me =(" i think im car polar. the smallest things would make me wanna sell my car to get a different one...the rx8 i love all accept for the fuel economy. my last car a 1998 e36 m3 i got rid of it because it didnt have tilt steering. -_-* that was a great car. lol i think im just gonna splurge and get an MS kit.

VW is one of the worst rated car companies in regards to reliability as reported by consumer reports. Nothing but trouble. Also I read an article recently that VW was considering pulling out of the US market because they are hemmoraging money in the US. The general accepted reason for this is poor quality and uninspired models, their bread and butter Jette has been selling very poor since the remodel.

Not gonna lie... I went through it a bit earlier this summer. Then I decided to make my 8 my own so I went Mod Crazy... Just look at the Sig.

I think the regular GTI has a more satisfying motor than the R32. The regular GTI looks better too.

i test drove an is300 with paddle shifters b4 i got my 8. I hated it. It's not like shifting at all.

I've had a 02 GTI and now a 04 RX-8 and a 06 GTI. The 02 GTI had a few problems, coilpacks,a vacuum leak, and window regulators but nothing more serious than that. The 06 GTI has had no problems. I think the some of the problems with the MK4 GTI/Jetta is that they were made in Mexico, and the MK5 GTI is built in Germany. As for the R32, those cars hold their value like crazy. MK4 R32's are still selling in the mid 20's for a clean unmodded one.

The cars were assembled in mexico, not built in mexico. thats why the motor doesnt go but everything else does.

I noticed this when my brother let me drive his jetta. It shifts crazy fast! I also noticed that when you took it to redline in manual mode it took over and upshifted. That thing is really fast in the straigh line.

I may be old fashioned or a purist, but an automatic is an automatic, I don't care WHAT fancy name or implementation they have for it. And for as long as I have 2 good hands and 2 good feet, I will never, ever pay money to drive one. Any and all dreams I had of a next-gen R32 died when I read "DSG only."

If I hadn't gotten the RX-8 it very well might have been a Speed3. I love the look of the car, the price isn't bad (once you get past the gay "market adjustments" that dealers will try to force up your ***) and the utility of a 4-door hatchback is always nice to have.

DSG is the manual trans for people with a bum left knee. I will keep my third pedal thank you very much.

Recent VW are getting better, but it's a dated chassis design with excellent handling but no responsiveness to speak of.

I had my '02 GTI "337 Edition" for 2 years, nearly 12K miles. No problems to speak of. Yeah, one time the radio wouldn't power up, and I had them switch to the improved engine coils during the famous recall, but never did I have a problem with the car.

Personally, I'm not really into the look of the new GTI. Grille/mouth is too big—and for the wrong reasons—and the whole thing's looking kinda generic Japanese, in a bad way. On the other hand it's supposedly a much better GTI. Same with the R32—I like the way the old one looked MUCH better. In a perfect world, I'd take the body and interior of the last GTI/R32 with the engine/suspension of the current one. (And, of course, the R32 would be available with a proper 6-speed.)

Final thought: don't forget that the R32, while AWD, is usually all or mostly FWD, if I'm not mistaken. If it's like the last R32, it only kicks into AWD when really pushed in extreme situations. My point is, for most routine, daily driving, you're still wheeling around in a FWD car. (And a rather heavy FWD car, at that.)

Adding to it is that the dealer network is terrible. My wife's car is a 98 VW Passat and it is the last VW we ever plan on owning. I do most of the routine maintenance on the car myself but we had a number of issues during the warranty period that required the car going in to the dealer and a few afterwards where it was still the best way to go (ignition control module failure). Each time it was a horrible experience and that was with 3 seperate dealers. The only VW dealer of the 3 that was passably competent was also a Porsche dealer but there, as a VW owner, you were treated like a 3rd class citizen (and the work was still only passable). I was treated better by them when I went in to buy parts for my old Porsche 944.

For a 4 door family sedan it sure handles nice but when the wheels finally fall off the Passat it will be the last VW we own.

Put it this way. We were replacing a blown turbo on my buddies GTI. All 4 studs that held the turbo to the manifold sheered off. Went up to the dealer, the guy just gave the studs to us no charge.

He said they keep them around because when removing the turbo they are going to break regardless.

Crappy, VW can spend .5 more on stainless studs?
