RX8 Pre-Purchase Inspection

RX8 Pre-Purchase Inspection
I did a quick search on the forum and didn't find anything about what to look for specifically when inspecting an RX8. Looking to possibly purchase a RX8 in the futre, and I wanted to know specifically what I should look for.
Also what years should I specifically avoid? Originally I was looking to purchase a 04-05, but was later advised by a close friend to purchase an 06 since those years were more problematic.
Just a new member looking for some insight. Thanks

get a compression test done, check warranty status, verify service history+recalls..
the first year of any model year car always tend to be more problematic for the obvious reasons..
as long as the car has been maintained well enough there should be no difference between an 04-08 because they are all the same mechanically..

As far as getting a compression test done, What have been peoples experiences with requesting that the test be performed by the seller--at least whent he seller is a dealer?
Also, what about post purchase from a private seller/non Mazda dealer? If the car is still under warranty, I'd imagine that you would have to have a noticeable and or reproducable "concern" to convinve the Mazda service dept to conduct the compression test. I'd love to have mine compression tested, but get the feeling that unless there is a problem, they won't just do it to "be sure".

yeah that is how it usually works, unless your car is showing symptoms of poor compression in which case they may do the test under warranty, otherwise its usually an out of pocket expense.. my local dealer wants something like $140.
there are pros and cons about buying from private parties. private parties (if 1 owner) tend to be more consistently driven and if you find out they know the rotary engine you're usually better off because they are just as finicky with it as you would want them to be. if you're buying from a used car dealer lot that isn't mazda franchised.. research thoroughly and try to get through to the previous owner, check the carfax for whats its worth but don't base you purchase on it.

Factory warranties follow the car, so I believe the overall warranty is 4 yrs, 50K miles. The powertrain warranty for the '04-'06 model years was extended to 5 yrs and 60K miles. Not sure if that applies to the newer model years. You can get that info and more on a potential purchase from MazdaUSA by providing them with the car's VIN. Call 800-222-5500. Those are the only possible warranties you will get when purchasing from an individual seller. Dealer may give you an additional short warranty in addition to the factory warranties.
