Rx8 shut down proceedure?
Hi Guys,
I was just on rx8club.com.au and found a member posted this:![Suspect](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/suspect.gif)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Plj4DW8rT2s
Been online now for a few years and wanted to get some advice from those who have had a more intimate relationship with the Rx8.![Wink2](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/wink2.gif)
I understand the start up and there are many schools of thought on this, however i'm more interested in what members think of the turn off procedure of revving it to 3k and then shutting it off?
His explanation of coating the rotors with oil sounds good, but my thoughts of flooding them with fuel would be a little strange no? If there is another thread about this I apologize, however I gladly welcome comments about the video.
Cheers.

I've had my 8 over five years now. It's never flooded, and I've never done the "rev to 3k" before turning it off. (Of course, I only turn it off after it's reached normal operating temperature.)

My local Mazda dealer told me to always rev to 3 thousand for a few seconds before shutting it off. One of the techs there believes that a lot of the engines are failing because people dont do it. I dont know the tech personally or know what his credentials are, but I do it everytime just to be safe.

naa, i had actually heard of this before, its apparently ok to rev it for a little while around this level.
I suppose the question to the others is - would doing this HURT the engine with the shutdown process....apart from the waste of fuel, what damage could it actually do? we all have our own little warm up processes - i'm curious to see if this is something anyone does.

I'm really curious about the reason for revving the engine at startup. I don't see much harm if the revs are kept low, but why? Somehow I don't think this guy is such an expert. But maybe I'm missing something, and if so I'd like to know.
Is it just about helping the engine get warmed up? If so, it's better to do under load at low RPMs. I'd like to know if there's a good reason for this.

Everything in here is hearsay, so you can just do what you want. I've shut the engine down cold a few times, and it didn't flood. Can it happen? Yes. So rev it if its cold, otherwise do what you do. Everything else is a waste of time, in my opinion.
When I turn my cars on, I pretty much start driving. No sense in wasting fuel letting it warm up.

Not an issue if you don't run a cat.
So long as you let the engine get to operating temperatures the shutdown revs aren't necessary. I haven't had any issues with startup once it's reached operating temperature.
The startup revs are completely unecessary imo. I typically don't rev my engine after startup for any reason and stay on the low end of the rpms until I reach operating temps, but that's just me trying to take it easy on the engine.

Only thing i do from the video is wait till my gauges and warning lights stop doing the dance and start it up. I've got into a habbit with the GSX so with this one i just carried it over. No issues.
Then start driving it, keeping it under 3k till it gets to mid temp and drive as normal. about the time i get inline for my kid at school shes at normal temp.

I HATE SPEEDBUMPS!
I never rev mine, i just let it warm up until it reaches the normal running temperature and then shut it off, just to be safe. Never had flooding issues yet.

I think I see what the deal is with that video. The part about turning the ignition on, then waiting five seconds before starting gives it away.
He's got the diesel version.
