I would prefer the Cayman as well but the Boxster is cheaper than the Cayman (wtf??) Anyways, Boxster yea does kinda look like a chick car but it's still screams Porsche to people who don't know cars. But you won't get much respect from other car enthusiasts.

RX-8 was a good match against the 986 S. But since the 987 models, the Box S is faster. May still handle about the same. But definitely faster.
I too would prefer the Gayman S.

It has its pros and cons.

If you like both cars enough to be able to argue which one you want to get, then take a look at the reliability of both of them and think about after the warranty goes up how much it'll cost to repair them both.

Think about the long term rather than just the upfront purchase of the vehicle.
LOL.... I'm not thinking about buying a porsche and for $65k, there are about 10 cars in front of it I'd rather have. It was fun to drive it back to back with my stock 8 though. Marque brands? Sure, when I'm done with residency and can afford it, I'd like to have a car that comes form the factory as I want it and will stand out. Nothing wrong with that....

I just have to chime in on this one. I am the Internet Manager for a Porsche dealer and I do have to agree with alot of what is being said. First off if you are going either Boxster or Cayman you have to spring the extra dough and step up to the S. The Porsche's feel alot faster off the line and they should, look at the torque curves. The Porsche exhaust just makes you want to turn off the radio and since it is mid engine is right there in your ear, I LOVE IT. Handling and ride I like my 8 better, not to mention that the Porsche shift gates are definatly much more narrow and take a bit of getting use to. And yes I too think the Cayman S is the best looking Porsche out there, I want Black. Would I get one over my RX-8? Not for the price diffrence. By time I spec'd out the car I would want I was over $70k! For about 10k more Im looking at a slightly used 911 turbo, and let me tell you that thing will scare the **** out of you!

Awww, come on guys. The comparo was just for fun. For the price, the RX8 really does stack up well though and is more comfortable for my 6'6", 225lbs.

having owned a 944 and two 993s in the past, I can say that anytime I saw a 944, 924, or boxter, I didn't see "OMFG A PORSCHE", instead I saw, "ah, a cheap porsche". The 944 handled well too, but it ends up being a discount car.

If you're going for brand name, getting the low end cuts off any gain you might have had.

I still own a RX8. No more Porsche.

Funny response here, it shows that most of you have never driven a Boxster or Boxster S.

Since when are 2900 pound mid-engined cars with 300HP and 911 brakes, world class steering feel ''chick cars''?

If people who buy a 65 000$ Boxster are ''too cheap'' than I guess you guys must be ''really poor'' for buying a 25 000$ car.

As for the 911 vs Boxster, aside from straight line speed there isn't much the 911 can do that the Boxster can't. The Boxster feels more nimble, more ''go-kart'' and it has a better platform being mid-engined.

I was expecting more from you guys...

Only until recently, and only with the S. Most boxsters on the road have 210-240 hp. And we're not talking about to the wheels.

Most boxsters cost around 45k. That's about what a normal SUV costs.

At 65k, there's a lot of choices, including the much more powerful corvette.

I'm not going to take it personally. But it sounds like you are.

The truth is, the boxster, much like the miata, are commonly regarded as chick cars, even if it isn't deserved.

The Boxster could go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and it would still look like a chick car. Plain and simple. Does it perform like chic car, of course not. I respect the hell out of its performance. Is all cosmetic, so those of you who took it to heart, dont get too worked up

...and convertibles are still for girls

My friend has a Cayman S. It's a great machine. He just put a Fabspeed exhaust on it and a lighter flywheel (don't recall the manufacturer) and that seemed to add a LOT of practical power- and it was already a powerful car.

I don't like it twice as much as my 8 and it rides MUCH harsher but it has no rattles what-so-ever and my brand new, never track driven 8 has so many noises it's ridiculous. Sounds like an American car inside.

There is a major price difference between the Cayman S and the Boxster S. And, the proper pronunciation is "Porsh-uh". But some of us are typical Americans and call it a "Porsh". Whatever, it's still a sweet, extremely well built car.

Well even the 986 S has 250HP and only weighed 2850 pounds. It's a pretty fast car, faster than an S2000, RX-8, etc...

When I said I was expecting more from you guys, I meant that since you all own RX-8's, you of all people should know that there are more than quarter mile times in what makes a car fun to drive.

Things like balance, steering feel, brakes, turn-in response, etc...

The only "enthusiasts" you won't get much respect from are the people that go around calling the RX-8 a piece of crap because it's slow (I.E. not really a car enthusiast). True enthusiasts will appreciate the Boxster whether it be an S or not. The brakes, road feel, and handling are all superb. The exhaust note is intoxicating and they're one of the best drivers cars on the road. My only problems with them... The S2000 is probably the better car for far less money. Also, the shifter is lacking, especially once you compare it to an S2000or RX-8.

True that!!!

Boxsters are just as a good as a 911, but just lacks hp stock. Just like the Mazdaspeed 3 is just as fast than our precious 8s, but with turns the 8 is superior.. Those complaining just can’t afford that lifestyle.
Rx8 better with modifications??? Any car could be... but SO, WHAT?!?!?! Its still no Porsche.

There is general talk among the porsche enthusiasts that the cayman platform is superior to the 911 WRT handling. There's now even a company in CT that's upgrading and installing the better engines in the caymans.

FWIW, I have a buddie with a wicked STI that would run with any Ferari out there. He has about $55k in it...... and it still NOT a ferari

Calling a boxster a chick car reveals much about you. I know a couple of guys who call anything under 300hp as chick cars (one drives a 300C, the other a Mustang). Neither have raced in their lives, and know little about cars. I remember a Mustang driver back in my solo 2 days referring to my miata as a chick car, guess who had better times?

Anyways, having driven a base boxster many times, it's certainly not worth its price but it's one of those cars that appeals first to the senses. I'd buy one in a sec if I had a Jay Leno sized garage and resources.
