I always get Mazda 3's trying me on the highway all the time on my daily commute to work. Its not even a contest, honestly....it always ends the same way , them becoming one with the horizon in my rear view mirror.

From a stop it's not even a contest either, a 7k clutch drop and the RX-8 is simply gone with the 3 not even remotely catching up.

If you would have said a Speed 3 then that playing field is on a different level all together.
are yoou stock? you have obviosuly never went up against a 3 with the right mods...Like I said before, I'm not trying to start a pissing contest. the one instance I mentioned is not the only time I raced a 8 with my 3. Continue to believe what you want, but I know that stock 8 versus my old 3 with mods meant I would win.

dyno of stock 8 found this online
dyno of 3 with I/H/E Not my exact dyno but of a 3 with similar mods. This one had vibrant header,AEM CAI, and borla exhaust. I had F2 header, F2 CAI, and mazdaspeed 3 exhaust. with Advanced timing and BC racing spec condensor(smoothed out the powerband and picked up some horses with this)

those graphs illustrate what I'm talking about when it comes to the torque issue. The rx8 makes 122tq at it's peak. The graph given for the 3 makes 30 more ftlbs of tq. That deficit must have made up for the 20hp difference because I had no problem beating 8's. I wish I could make believers out of you but since the car is totaled I guess I'm living in the past. Too bad I don't have anymore concrete info like vids to confirm this.

Stock but I know how to drive the wheels off this car and most rwd cars that come in my path. And yes I went up against modded 3's and stock 3's, same out come, they see my tailights. You do realize that torque moves you and Hp gets you there... And let's not throw in the 4:7 gear ratio of the 8 compared to the 3. Night and day difference.

Here in Orlando everybody is rolling around modded with something under the hood. I have a air filter but to me that is not really a mod for this car, the stock air box is just as good if not better.

I am sure you did beat an 8 but I am very curious wether the guy knew how to drive, was it a autotragic, etc. Many people get an 8 and can't drive like my buddy when he got his 8. Shifting way to early, not properly launching the car, not dropping a gear down to take off fast from a cruising speed, not staying on the gas in corners, etc. Many poor drivers make the 8 look slow. That is why the 8 has such a bad rep.

if we were having this convo before I totaled my car i would drive down to race you...In a sense we're both right. Maybe i never met a 8 with the most important mod(driver mod). I can tell you that every 8 i raced was 6speed. When racing from a dig they never launched so the outcome there might have been different. You make valid points. I guess i was just lucky enough to never meet a real driver.

uh, i don't know really get how this turned into your thread about a modded 3 (not ms3) beating the 8. i'm glad you think you can pull on an 8, but like dailydriver and others have said, you were pulling an an auto 8, guaranteed. i'd be my car on it actually. the auto 8 has much less hp than the 6speed.

and, fyi, you can have your i/h/e all day, but there's much more to speed than that. e.g., WEIGHT, gear ratios, etc. so seriously, take a chill pill with your modded 3. the only 3 that is faster than the 8 is the ms3, not your base 3 with an intake.

good god

so back to the op, i think laythor said it best. both cars have their benefits and weaknesses. if the 3 makes more sense for you, get it. my gf has it, it's a great little car.

^i don't doubt it!

i bet this guy got on the gas first, before the other guy was even looking, so he got ahead by half a car length and then says he pulled on a 8 and won because he has "i/h/e"

Sorry for the thread jack to the OP.

With the 8 ,the main mod is the driver believe it or not. I have raced two modded RX-8's ,and on paper they should wipe the floor clean with me with there go fast mods, but your car is as only as strong as your weakest link, the DRIVER! We switched cars and I would win in there own modded RX-8 , leaving them only shaking there head and admiting that they could not drive.

The 8 is a easy car to drive , yet its difficult because of it low torque and high rpm rev range. Being in the wrong gear can make or break this car from letting someone else seeing your tailights or making you be the one to see tailights. Being in the proper gear is key!

To the OP get the 3. Or if you don't mind , I know if I was in your shoes I would try and find the last year they made a Speed 6.

Either way you will still enjoy any of the two mentioned, the new3 felt sporty and fun to toss around and yet you could take 3- 4 people with you and still get over 30mpg.

The Speed 6 was like driving a RX-8 just with more mass , great handeling for its size,a little more room and a bit more wow factor over the 3. That AWD would definitely be a plus too for your situation.
