Maybe it's because you're in Canada.

If you're talking about the Carmax on plano parkway, then I believe I test drove that very same car. I loved it. Car and Driver called the 8 a Lotus Elise station wagon. I guess you could call it an S2000 station wagon as well. If you don't need the space, S2000. For us 6 ft+ people and those who need at least a semi-decent trunk to hall stuff around, get the 8. Pretty simple. The 8 won't be a bad choice though, if you do need the practicality. But since you're talkin autocross, the S2000 sounds delicious.

The only engines that are failing repeatidily are the auto 4-ports. Dont worry about engines blowing up, my guess (just a guess of course) would be 150k-200k will be the life of the renesis. The old rx7's that weren't FI were good for lots of miles, maybe a apex bearing replacement at 100k and then good to go for another 100k.

Both are great cars, you really can't go wrong, with what you save $$$ wise in the s2000 you make up for in insurance savings.

RX8 is actually classified as a coupe by most entities and it's definetely not a 4 cyl. I think you're thinking 1.3L small displacement.

S2000 is only a 2.0 or 2.2L, they're both RWD and are fairly sporty cars. I imagine insurance is around the same, I just want to know what you guys pay and how old you are.

Tell me the curb weight and i'll tell you where to autocross (or it's googleable)

Indeed I am, they have 2 red ones and a black one which I think was sold as of saturday. I test drove the one with leather, outside not in the showroom. It made a really loud rear differential whining sound at low speeds and sounded like a blender in 1st gear @ high rpms, I wonder if it's normal.

If any of you dallas/plano/lewisville etc owners are willing to take me for a spin I'd love to check out the car in the hands of an enthusiast. I never really took the carmax test drive car over 4500 rpms or around any corners at real speed.

Mine classifies it as a 4 door, 4 cylinder partly because of the rx8s are rare, nobody knows about the car. This is one of the upsides to Mazda's lack of advertising. Some entities DO put them in the same price range, because they've updated their info, done their research, etc. Insurance at my age is high enough, so I wouldn't of been able to afford the s2k anyway, since I expect to keep my rx8 for a while.

curb weight is 3000-3100

yea, hypocrisy on my part.

even that's an exageration. There's been no unreasonable amount of 4 ports failing either. Just that fishiness out west last year. I drove around in 110-115F ambient (on the streets) many times last summer without a single issue. 60k and going.

I think I wil be in a RX8 shortly. Found a few leftover 05's with sport package and aero pack for about 23.5 out the door. Are there any small ala carte options I need to get besides sport and appearance kit like homelink, auto dimming mirror etc. All the 05's come with the cool flip key/keyless entry right?

Lastly, what build date should I look for, I'm guessing early 05 or nov-dec 04 to avoid all those 04 recalls?

You need to figure out if you need the 2 extra seats or not because thats the real question here. The RX8 is what would hapen if you gave the S2k a back seat. Which means bigger, heavier with a shot in the performance dept but more practical.

If you dont need a back seat... get the S2k of course... the RX8 shouldnt even be an option.

If you need relative practicality... then RX8 of course.... I've never heard of a practical roadster.

As far as reliability goes..... if thats a biggie for you then It would probably be safest to avoid the RX8. I'm not saying the RX8 is unreliable but fact of the matter is its too early to tell and it has a rotary engine which is somewhat "immature" when compared to the conventional pistons...and with relatively "immature" technology you gotta be ready for anything (sorry guys but thats my opinion). I know there are all kinds of lemons out there to watch out for but you may want to be a little extra weary with this one
Well said. We have both an RX-8 and an S2000. The RX-8 is an excellent compromise car; if you want practicality, including comfort and space, get the RX-8. The S2000 has far fewer compromises; it performs at a higher level, is more track- and autocross-worthy right out of the box, but is far less practical or comfortable, and is harder to drive at the limit without going over the limit. Oh, yeah, and you might want to keep in mind that one is a convertible.

Right I understand all that about the S. The girlfriend has an 00 grand prix white with red and black interior which is about as raw of an S as you can get. I thought about it carefully and I'd like 75% of the S2000 performance with 200% more practicality and a bit more comfortable ride.

Made an offer to a local Dallas dealer but they messed up and lost 2K Mazda cash back since they didn't R&R their leftover 05's 2 weeks ago. They will get back on me to see if they can do about 23 out the door.

I also found a list of 8 other cars in TX that are 6spd sport in white, titanium, blue and silver so I will call to see who has the best deals. Are those 8000 off MSRP stories really true or does that vary from dealer to dealer?
