rx8 won't start

04 rx8 manual trans
Soo today i left the gym my car started right up it cooled off and had no problems starting drove about 15 mins home stopped to get gas filled up and tried starting again and it cranked once then sounded like an arc happened (nice loud shock could hear it inside a completely closed car under the hood) and wouldnt crank anymore tried jumping it nothing. tried cranking a few more times and sounded like an electrical charge was building/whining (sounded kind of like when iron man charges his hand blasters) then i noticed faint smoke smelt like burnt copper and it looked like it was comming from the starter (or somewhere around it) a couple of guys helped me pop start it and it kick up fine and i drove it home and havent tried starting since i think its the starter so i ordered a new one but if anyone else has any input would be appreciated. Oh yeah side note... past couple weeks it had problems starting up when its hot like it would crank for a bit but nothing never let it crank more then 3 seconds before letting it rest i recently replaced the coils because of a misfire problem and thought it was just a problem with the coils getting to hot... but could have been the starter reaching its last leg... i dont think i have compression problems because i can still get on it and it moves no problem. I read around a bit on here but everytime i see a post on here it can be literally anything and its that part is broken or compression loss. So anyone run into this or know anything else that may have caused this?

Your first problem is you put gas in your car. Try petrol.

I think your starter is just bad. The solenoid is bad so its not engaging the fly wheel.

Did you also replace plugs and leads while you were down there @coil packs?? That would be the other part of the equation as far as ignition goes. @-@

Also vaccum hoses, air pump and intake related things. Try cleaning your MAF sensor as well for good measure and replace your airbox filter to ensure proper breathing. Hard to diagnose from where I'm sitting but as far as your car completely not starting, the starter sure sounds to be the culprit

You are tired of your car. More times than not, You can verify you ignition system is ok by checking for spark at the plug while a friend crank the engine.

I got it started again the starter fried (replaced it with a remanufactured 04 one not sure its upgraded) but ive been having other problems lately hot start and somewhat of a stumbly idle like itll have a very slight drop in rpms (not even 50 but enough to notice it droped) for about 1 second every 30-60secs and ive been having problems with my 02 sensor it was replaced with a cheap one and i bought the car with an unkown aftermarket exhaust and my coils went and when they did i drove it home and im not sure if the cat was melted or not but the 02 sensor was fine i havent been able to take it off to check due to time... so i get the p420 code for cat not running efficently i drove it down the high way going 73 at 73k rpms to try and heat it up and blow out any built up carbon in the exhaust it worked for about a week kept the light off with no sign of coming back on so im not sure what to do im down to a list of a few things that could be the problem either the cats bad my fuel pumps bad my spark plugs are bad my other two coils are bad starter could be bad too(i only replaced two because i didnt have the funds to replace all at the time) or worst case i have compression loss...
