i never got the newb bashing here. although, i did learn from years being on the 7 forum to search search search. some people on here look at my post count and think that im a newb, but the main reason my post count is low is because i usually search my *** off on a subject and only post when really needed. some people even think im a rotary newb just because i own an 8 even though ive been driving rotary cars for almost 10 years now.

it does get annoying sometimes when there is 5 threads in a row asking about which intake is the best but we really shouldnt bash these people to death. just think what would happen if we bashed someone like Charles R Hill to death and he was like "f this site." or anyone else who has been extreamly helpful in making this site, community and cars, what they are today.

on the other hand, i have met some really great people and awesome friends on both this forum and the 7 forum. some forum memebers i spend a couple of hours a day talking to them. and its really cool that i can go to almost any state in this country and have a rotary brother or sister telling me to come see them. on fact, during both hurricanes katrina and gustav i had forum members who i never met in person offer me a place in their home for however long i needed. its amazing how something as simple as liking the same car can bring people together.

and its not really like that on every forum. one of my friends is into 240s and has thousands of posts on thier forum and he tells me he really doesnt know anything about the people there, but he and i talk about forum members like they are family.

So, from a noob perspective... Is this forum a bad forum? Not at all. Should we be more civil to each other, of course. That should apply to all aspects of life, not just an internet forum. Perhaps the less educated questions should be responded to with a simple, please search with this key word or maybe just the link to the thread itself. No more, no less.

Now, as a noob we need to realize that no question we come up with is going to be an earth shattering, mind blowing, it's never been asked before question. Just like a baby doesn't come out of the womb with Einstiens IQ, we aren't going to sit in our 8's and become the ultimate authority on rotary engines. We should be respectful enough of everyones time to peform due diligence on our questions before posting - I feel confident that it has already been answered. If you still can't find your answer, try PM'ing a local 8 owner. It worked well for me.

You might also consider taking a few hours out of your life to attend your local meet. I've yet to meet any of the DFW area 8 guys (& Angela) that wouldn't bend over backwards to help me out - even though I know I've asked some really noob like questions. Although, I'll just deny them and there's no written proof that I ever asked them!!

Anyway.. just thought I'd throw in one noob guy's humble opinion..

oh but we did bash Ray tremendously for like...... most of a day...... ok maybe not quite that long .......minutes really.... we had him nearly cursing, and i think he may have rubbed his bald head in frustration once.... but the bastard stuck around anyway and it looks like we're stuck with him. and dont think we didnt give it our best shot

You really need to consider adding a newbie section to the forum

thats not a bad idea. perhaps it will help direct new members to introduce themselves and could provide links to useful information for new members. it could also include advice on how to search andwill give the new members some info to get acclimated before they jump onto the board. i know we have the information that i listed readily available in every section as a sticky or FAQ but often times that info is overlooked by new membes looking for answers. a new member technical/non technical section would be a good idea. it would draw the new members into that section and the links would be right there. it could really direct them in the right path.

n00b questions aren't going to go away, all we can do is reduce their frequency. We want to keep people sticking around without having to coddle them.

Hehe, there are many people here that are tough on n00bs, I'll agree on that. But it's a good laugh, and if original poster doesn't seem to be too serious I don't mind it.

I've been using internet forums for the better of 10 years myself, including moderating and running, so I felt well received here. Asked some "noob" questions, but more in an opiniated manner. Things that are harder to search and more reliant on insight. Got very friendly and good answers, so if you do some reading and not act like a doofus you don't get flamed.

I guess the most easily flamed are the "IF I BAY DIS CAR, CAN I GET FLAMES OUT THE EXHAUST?!!!!1!" ones.

I think much of what we see is just ignorance of how you function on a forum environment. With as many people as we have on RX8club and other car forums, these places have developed their own culture with it's own social rules. A lot of new members are more or less stepping into a foreign land and they barely speak the language.

For those of us who have been around RX8club for some time, it's hard to understand why someone would waste time posting a new topic when 99% of the questions a new RX8 owner could ask have already been answered time and time again. With the wealth of information on this forum, it seems silly.

Even with a collection of links, people seem too lazy to even read. If they can't get the answer they want in 5 sentences or less they lose interest.

Another aspect is the frustration some members have when people post threads almost demanding someone tell them an answer. That kind of spoon feeding is usually what gets you flamed...that or pretending you searched and then asking a very obvious question.

Asking "is the rotary a bad engine?" , "what oil do I use?", "should I premix?", or "what's this spinning triangle thing all about?" is sure to get you flamed.

I'm all about helping any member, new or otherwise that demonstrates a willingness to learn and a clear understanding of the basics of the topic.

This site is actually my first forum. I used it as an information tool...not as my own personal "Ask Jeeves". Noobs are willing to start a new thread and ask their questions but won't take the time to type in the same question in the search field...or even on Google. That's what irks me.

What's worse is if someone answered their question nicely and sent them the link but continue to ask questions that are answered in that link. It's like if you don't specifically spell it out for them in their thread it doesn't exist.

even when i see info in other threads i look at the date and see 04 03 , its better off starting a new thread because of the lack of understanding rx8 because thats when they came out

I dunno, seems like the site is functioning fine to me. Searches complete in 1 second, threads load fast, etc. If the site is slow for you you might have a computer issue. @_@

Why not have a "newbie start here" section and insist that newly joined members can only post new threads in this section for their first X number of posts? That way you contain all new inquiries in the one area without flooding the normal sections. "X" can be as low as 2, 3, 5 or 10; just enough to answer some obvious questions in a confined area. Also, newbies will see all of the newbie questions in that section and they may find a lot of questions answered already?

Not a bad idea, but post count might be the wrong way to go, because they could just post nonsense, like "Hi." Maybe some combination of post count with Join Date so they need time under their belt.
