S2 Oil Consumption

Is it normal for my dipstick oil to not have dropped at all since 500 miles?

I checked it the other day and it was still at full and i didn't need to do any topping off..

check it once in a while, the tank is V shaped, will drop faster as it goes, usually half a litre around 1500km more or less depending on driving

I think it all depends on the amount of high revving you're doing. Long highway miles at low rev not as much oil consumption. High revving over 500 mile more oil consumption. I usually avg. about 1qt to 1500 miles but mostly city driving and I get my revs in.

i hit above 5-6k rpms several times (about 3 times) i do accelerate fast but not full throttle. shifts at 3k. i checked my exhaust pipes and theres a ton of soot there i'm assuming from burnt oil. I would've guessed that the oil level would've dropped some, but none at all. Im sure my OMP is fine too.

it should drop at least 1/4 or a quart in 500 mi assuming that the dealer didnt overfill the oil.

Soot on the exhaust tips is not caused by burning oil, the soot is from the car running rich. The reason you have not seen a drop in the oil level is because you are shifting at 3k and driving like an old person lol. Trust me your oil level will drop.

I'm at the same boat your in. It's because your in the break-in period and your rpms are not up. Can't wait to reach the 1000 mile mark, change my oil and slowly bring up the revs!

I think most posts about Series II oil consumption indicate a quart every 2000-3000 miles of normal driving.

That's your problem ... jJust give it a bit every now and again.

Your OMP is fine, you're just driving too much like a granny.

Don't drive it like you stole it, just give it a bit of a boot from time to time.

Guys i just now topped off my engine with Castrol GTX SAE 5W-20. That's the right oil right? The info on the front says its for chrysler, honda, ford, and some other makes, but I figured that it'd be fine. What's the right type of oil brand to put in the car?

EU

Mazda "advises" 5W-20 only in the USA; in the rest of the world (a.o. Europe) they advise 5W-30 (in service-manual).........I use 0W-40.......and premix.
Brand is not the most important aspect imo. as long as it is a sufficient known brand.
Search for discussions and reasons etc.
Best regards, Ruud

No need to drive the car after topping it off.

I too had a similar issue with a lack of oil consumption mainly because my driving tends to be 2-3k RPM's in traffic with only a short stretch (1-2mi) where I can really open it up then its back to granny I have to wonder if the OMP injects any oil at 2-3k rpm....
