Self-leveling headlights not level?

I've noticed over the last couple weeks that when I drive at night and have my headlights on in my neighborhood, I can see that my right headlight is a degree or two higher. It's very noticable because there is a definitive "aliasing" effect between the two light sources.

It looks something like this ahead of me.

______----------

I've heard the leveling mechanism is extremely slow, but it's been a good while. Anyone else seen this type of thing?

I believe the headlights are set like that at the factory to keep from blinding oncoming drivers at night.

Yes this is normal. The right is higher since it is the left headlight that if aimed higher will blind or dazzle oncoming drivers. My last three cars had HID's and all had the exact same pattern.

It is aimed higher to illuminate road side signs and dangers!

You go up a hill and the lights slightly adjust up the hill, go down a hill, and the lights move down a bit. It's hard to really notice but sometimes if your really quiet you can hear the motor in the lights whirling.

Actually, I think it only adjusts to the compression of the front/rear suspension. If there are rear passengers or heavy items in the trunk, the headlights compensates for the extra weight.

NomisR is correct.

They only move in relation to the attitude of the vehicle. That is why there are attitude sensors on the front and rear suspension arms. These are the same sensos used by the DSC to monitor body roll.

This is to monitor the cars angle. If upon acceleration the nose of the car goes up then the headlights will motor down to keep them level with the road.

On most cars this self-leveling occurs in a split second. Unlike my Passat W8 that had Bi-xenon lamps they would actually motor down then up upon starting the car.
