Stay above 3K and below 5K for best mileage. Don't accelerate too hard. Take corners fast to preserve momentum. Redline once per trip.

BTW, I can't believe it; another mileage thread!

if you are only getting 13 mpg you must be driving the car hard . What makes you think you will get 20 mpg driving an S2000 hard ?

It's worse than that. Think of the weight you're going to put on with that extra slice a day. Hauling that around will really kill your mileage.

Returning to scolding the OP about doing math beforehand...

When I was car shopping, I considered the S2000 and 350Z at $10K more than the 8, and the Z4 at nearly $20K more. Having bought the 8, I've got an extra $10K to $20K in my wallet to cover the extra gas.

I know its hard to accept the fact that it cost more in gas, but the mpg improvement on a s2000 ( you mentioned you were considering selling the 8 for one) wont be much better if any, plus you said it your self. This is the best car you have ever driven...

So is it worth cutting corners in other places to drive the best car ever?

Just don’t want to see you sell it and buy a A4 and then miss the 8. Don’t get me wrong, I love Audis, I'm on Audizine.com more then this forum and I don’t even have an Audi. But I have driven pretty much every Audi (including the new RS4, new S8, new S4, B5 S4 with KO4's...) and the 8 is still the most fun to drive. nothing handles like it, and it stops faster then my friends evo 9 (which has the brembos stock). Its practical having 4 doors, with the styling of a 2 door. over all you just got to love it.

I guess the final decision is up to you but just think about it before you right the 8 off your list.

-Derek

thanks, derek. I guess i am driving the 8 hard (I come close to redline or around 7 all the time) but if I don't drive it like that, it's pretty weak. I think the S2k and the A4 would be much better on gas, even if I drove them hard.

In the end, I probably won't sell the 8, but I thought I'd throw it out there. It's a shame because this car is so perfect, other than this one flaw.

dude.............run your car on NAWSSSSSS, you'll get better MPG! but ofcourse......you'll obviously be paying for the NO2, if you are seriously concerned about MPG, go to the gym, work out some, it helps, not satisfied? put in 87 octane, ****, your car might run crappy, but saves your wallet, hell, it that isn't good enough, get an electric motor conversion.....shitty performance, redline at 60mph 6th gear, but hell, you'll only have to charge it up

still not satisfied?...well........my bike here needs a new owner, and it gets INFINITE MPG!

Any car driven in the meat of the powerband that much is going to net abysmal fuel economy. My dad gets 8mpg on the track in his mazdaspeed mx-5 but close to 30mpg on the street. If I drive the rx8 really hard like that for a tank I've seen as low as 12 mpg. Being reasonable and only getting into the r's and throttle when you have the room to do it/enjoy it and driving sensibly in traffic will net you significant gains. I get around 18mpg mixed city and highway and always nail it a few times during a ride. Just don't be a hammer in the slow stuff.

you've joined the ranks. Sorry hear you go, but you would be far from the first! Always said that this car isn't for everyone...so don't take anything that anyone says too personal.

DO keep in mind however...a sports car is a sports car. It doesn't matter what it is, if you drive it like a sports car, it's going to return sports car milage. It's just reality and the way things work.

Good luck with your search for the green giant

I sometimes (ok - often) tend to drive a bit like a high- schooler that just got outta detention (cant help it - it's in my blood) I avg. 15.5 mpg .... but since switching to mid grade (89) I have gained an mpg! ... now hitting 16.5 ish. Shall this trend continue?

I dunno ... but I really dunno if the renesis quite does need premium ... I always ran good ol' regular in my '85 rx-7 and that thing ran strong as all hell untill 178k (( still ran great ... car was hit & run))

search for threads on octane ... I've read some good one in the tech garage

Hey just out of curiosity and because thought of selling has crossed my mind as well...but it evaporated anytime I drove it...

Is you car an 07 with a 6speed? Mine is about a month old and I try to be gentle on gas, which is hard...but when I was staying in under 4000RPMS I achived my best milage of about 16.5. (First 600 miles)

When I was driving it harder it went down to 14 something. My comute is all freeway, 12 miles one way and then back, no traffic, but cars here move around at avarage speed of about 75-80 so I am above 4000RPMS just to keep up....maybe it is CA gas (91octane I buy Shell for now)

Anyways it could be that the 07 model has actually worse milege, beacuse I can not figure out how to get 18 let alone 20 (i haven't tried a long drive yet...)Would be intersting from other 07 owners.

I just work a little more to pay for difference...

That being said, I did the math and figured I spend an extra $168 a month on gas over a car that gets about 20 MPG. That's kind of a lot. Has anyone heard of people selling this car for this reason?

nice to see you thought things through before you bought it.

If the low mpg is a huge concern, get some green together and buy a used bike. Ride it on nice days. My ZX14 gets like 40mpg, and I go into triple digits all the time. For $4500, you can get a Bandit 1200 used, it'll go 0-60 in <3 seconds, and will get 50mpg easily.

My 2 cents

I drove a tank full not revving over 3K rpm and got 13.5 mpg. I normally get 12mpg.

RPM's aren't the whole story. If your driving 3k and lugging it (mashing the gas way out of the power band) you'll get abysmal mpg and really put some stress on your motor. Also, I'm not sure what the AFR looks like at that part of the powerband.

I've also heard from a few owners that the mileage improves quite a bit after break in. I bought my car with 8,000 miles on it so I can't attest. I can say that the new unclogged cat, new coils and plugs considerably improved my mileage.

If you want to play, you have to pay for the gas. No comprable car in the segment is going to be night and day better on gas.

The only exception to this is my dad's mazdaspeed mx5. Terrific car, decent power and great mpg! That said, if you need to bring more than a sack lunch with you every day your SOL, and have fun with the wind noise (top up) and lack of refinement. Also, you better pray the person in the expedition distracted by their kids, dvd player and cell phone sees you in that little thing!

What about the ELISE ? You can beat it and get 20mpg.

Arg. That sounds like my father's F350. Do you have a snowplow on your 8?

It is not like you haven't wasted our time before you bought you 8. Here you are wasting it again as an 8 owner now.

Did you learn anything about the 8 mileage/powerband on the boards before you bought it?

You're a moron.

the hit you take from the trade in is probably way more than what you would save in gas by switching car...

I'm a moron? That's pretty rude. I bet you don't hold doors open for strangers. You probably litter, too. Makes ya feel good if nobody catches you.

I did do a lot of research here--and I'm sorry for wasting your time--before I bought. But i guess I didn't think it would be this bad. I also kind of ignored it because I really wanted the car. I also think that my car may be a rare one that gets way below the average, because even if I shift before 4 i still get poor mileage.

Anyway, sorry again. If I post something in the future--for your sake I'll try not to--please just resist reading it. I didn't mean to waste anybody's web-surfing time.

I'm guessing you didn't break it in right. I'm guessing all of you getting under 15 mpg broke yours in wrong.

I spent the first 5000 miles doing it right and now I'm getting at least 18mpg, even when I drive like I'm at the track. I haven't averaged any less on a tank of gas.

I think you have engine problems. Or maybe I got one of the good cars?

And if you want to call one of your fellow 8ers a moron, go ahead and include your home address in the post so he can at least come flog you with a lead pipe.

I love you all.

I just got the car (used, with about 26K on the odometer) so you may be right. Maybe the previous owner didn't break it in correctly and I am reaping all of the benefits. Later, bros.
