This thread makes no sense.

You initially said you would save $168 a month if you switched to a 20 mpg car. You then backed it up with math that showed you saving $126 a month with a 22 mpg car. By general gestimation, that puts your initial claim in excess of 40% off. That's pretty far off.

Second, 13 mpg is garbage. It is not representative of a well driven, good condition Rx-8. If your 8 has a bad, low compression engine, you should still be under warrantee. If it is a good engine, you are practically autocrossing the car to work. Under those conditions, you won't get 20 mpg out of most cars. Gas mileage was a readily apparent weakness of any and all rotary engines of all time.

This things combine to define this thread as halfway between a whine and bullspit.

third -.the hit you take on depriciation ALONE would probably take an easy 5 years, if not more, to offset on gas. If gas is the real reason your trying to dump the 8, it really isn't all that smart of a financial decision...at all.

I just think it's hilarious how all you guys freak out over the 8's gas mileage. I'm very happy because I figure I will be spending about $30 less a month on gas. Just bought my 04 on Saturday (1st Autox on Sunday, 19 hours later) and already have seen a lot better gas mileage than I got in my SVT Focus.

The difference being that I was always running my SVTF around at near full-tilt, whereas with the 8 that same speed level is available with far less throttle. I find myself driving slower and more conservative than before and just enjoying the car.

I still get better gas mileage than half the vehicles (has to be 60% trucks and SUVs in Iowa) around here.

I did do a lot of research here--and I'm sorry for wasting your time--before I bought. But i guess I didn't think it would be this bad. I also kind of ignored it because I really wanted the car. I also think that my car may be a rare one that gets way below the average, because even if I shift before 4 i still get poor mileage.

Anyway, sorry again. If I post something in the future--for your sake I'll try not to--please just resist reading it. I didn't mean to waste anybody's web-surfing time.

If you're complaining about getting 20 MPG, but 22 MPG is about average for most cars.

I'm guessing you don't really understand the problem.

Broke my car according to the manual for the for the first 3K. I do all city driving and just driving it normally I'll get 12.5 mpg. If I go aggressive 40% of the time 12mpg. If I dog it no hire then 3K rpm 13.5mpg. Dealer says this is normal and every thing is fine. Of course he won't check compression or anything else outside plugging the car into the computer.

I spent the first 5000 miles doing it right and now I'm getting at least 18mpg, even when I drive like I'm at the track. I haven't averaged any less on a tank of gas.

The $168 was a typo. The math comes out to about $126 extra driving my RX-8 over a car that gets MPG in the low 20s.

Period.

Sorry to sound like an ******* or whiney. And I am not driving my car that crazily at all. I tach it up to about redline a few times in my daily commute, but I should be able to. That's where the power is.

And yes, maybe my compression is off or something. I'll have the dealer "look into it." I have a full factory warranty until Feb. 2008, but I have a feeling the dealer is going to say everything looks fine to them.

I also noticed you used different fuel grades in your calculation. You can run 89 fine without any problems in your 8. If you're using premium, downgrade to 89 and reap the instant rewards!

Also 13 mpg is really low unless you're doing all city driving. I would bring it in and ask the dealer to take a look at your ignition coils, make sure the PCM has the most up to date flash, make sure your plugs aren't fouled. There are TSBs for this on the forum that you can bring with you to complain about poor gas mileage and hard starting. They should do it for free. Then you should be up in the 18-20 range. do this first before selling.

I think we're missing the most important factor.

How big a boat are you towing?

I am def not doing all city driving. My commute to work is 26 miles each way, all highway w/ little traffic, and I'm doing between 75 and 85 the entire way.

I really hope there IS a problem with the ignition coils or something because if this car were better on gas it would be perfect. Thanks!!

^^ based on that you should be getting much closer to 20mpg. Take it in with the TSBs and see what's up.

Something must be wrong with your car.

If you averaged the rpms you make when driving on highway (the majority of your trip) what would you say it is?

Oh, and at what point does the low fuel light come on (how many miles)?

I know it may sound neat to stay in 4th gear and do 85mph, but you do know you can shift to 5th and 6th right?

j/k

When I bought the 8, the car had 500 miles on it already.

I thought my car had been used for demo or test driving car.

I guess that means there was no break-in period.

Do you think that no break-in period car gets less MPG?

I have never ever got over 18 mpg since I have owned it.

Usually, I fill up 13 gal, but only drive 220~230 miles.

Hm....

I was getting around 19 until the flash then I got around 21 for a week then down to 16 or 17. I don't know. I guess it just varies but 12 is truly unfortunate. Getting near super-car territory there.

I was getting about 260 a tank until I got the flash, now I get about 230.

Still, 13 mpg is not right, for just about any car.

I think the new flash lowered MPG for most everyone. I dont live in a hot area--wish I could go back (well sorta).

I don't know about supercar... But I traded in my wife's 1994 Toyota 4Runner for the 8, and the 4 Runner averaged 12MPG (when driven gently) so the 8 ACTUALLY SAVES ME GAS!!!!! (scary isn't it?)

Shifting at about 4500, I get 19 MPG, city driving.
