Sensitive subject, the true HP rating of a stock RX-8
#76
In the 2nd clip, you can see my radar detector, with GPS-based speed display. It is behind about a second, but it does show the speed difference. Mine is off ~4% (2mph at 50, 3 at 75, 4 at 100), showing high. So that runup was actually 48 to 89 or so, but I figured chameleon was using the speedo for his times, so I did the same.

My previous car is a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS 6 speed of which I am the original owner. The Celica has a 1.8 liter engine that revs to 8k and is rated at 180 hp and only 130 lb-ft of torque, so I’m actually very used to the experience of a low torque but hard working motor. My new RX8 feels quite a bit slower despite having more torque. I know that there is a fairly significant weight difference between the two, however, the RX8 is no pig and 52 hp is a fairly large chunk to make up for it. When I find that the RX8 with more torque and more hp feels noticeably slower and takes longer to pass cars, it makes me raise an eyebrow at the 232hp 159ft claim from Mazda…
I have 212 bhp. He has 260-280. maybe more. My car is faster than his to where he cant catch me.
EDIT: and when we used to run, I had low compression on 1 rotor which eventually led to my rebuild
EDIT: my mistake. the supra had 225 in non-turbo form. so he might have had 240-250 hp. Still has more than me.

i am relaxed. and i wasnt throwing flames, just trying to make a logical comparison

Your car isn't as fast as you think, get over it. 230hp is still 230hp. I have doubts about it making that much power.
Just as a reference
50-89mph
4.77 sec 400HP C6 in 3rd
7.08 sec RX-8 in 3rd only
6 sec flat for 350z, include a 4th gear shift
Correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't 09 have a shorter rear end, wouldn't he hit the rev limiter before 90mph? With my race rubber, i can barely hit 90mph at fuel cut. Keep in mind this is actual speed, not indicated speed.

more than liekly that celica was fwd. way way less drivetrain loss. And you have to remember, the rx8 PEAK hp is 232hp. Only if its at 232hp for 1 second.....its still the PEAK. If that Celica car can hold 180hp for a real long time throughout the powerband, then it possible might be faster than the rx8. Im not defending the rx-8 im just saying.
I'm not trying to be argumentative with you. I appreciate that you are simply trying to be helpful by pointing out some things that I may have not considered in my comparison between the two cars.
I think that it has pretty much been determined without any doubt that my particular RX8 is not performing as it should. My car is a 2009 RX8-R3 with just over 4,000 miles on it. I am the original owner and I have owned this car for about 3 months now. I have an appointment scheduled with my dealership to take a look at the car this Friday to try and fix my power loss issue. Wish me luck!

Well, crap. I just did a couple 50-90 pulls in 3rd and averaged 8.8 seconds. I've got an 04 6MT with 41K miles. I'm the second owner and I'm pretty sure these are original coils. I've changed the plugs and wires within the last 4000 miles. Looks like it's time for some new coils. At least I hope that's all it's time for.

My Celica does not hold 180hp for a real long time throughout the powerband. It makes peak power at 7,600 rpm and redline is 8,000 rpm. The RX8 has a lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft running to the rear and don’t forget that crankshaft on a rotary engine does not have to power any camshafts to push open valves. So the power loss from the crank power to the wheels may be greater on a RWD RX8 when compared to my FWD Celica but I really don’t think that it would make such a huge impact.

do you know why that is?
the rx7 tranny has lower gearing. meaning to the 1/4, you only have to shift 3 times. in the rx8, you have to shift 4 times. thats where that gain of ~.2-.3 seconds is.
thats why the car runs mid 14s and everyone is like, hey its slow. but from a roll it can decently keep up with a lot of cars that from a 1/4 mile stand point, it shouldnt. also contributing to this is the low hp and low torque form a stand still.
and the dealerships going to give you the run around. so i really wish you good luck.

you do realize that the 3 cars you listed that are faster with same to less horsepower are also lighter. and that the 350z weights a few hundred pounds more?
for the future, roughly..
100lbs= 10whp.
a stock rx8 weighs 3050lbs. i know some rx8s out there are down to 2800lbs. those rx8s are fast.

This is kinda off subject but is the 04-05 8s really that bad compared to the rest of the years? I know they have the recalls and all that but if you take care of those....what makes them so crappy compared to the rest? Just wondering cause I have an 04 m/t 6sp....power seems to be fine. Also...I had heard that the 04 had a different hp rating than the rest of the years. That could of been total BS and I"m thinking it is...but...anyone got an absolute on that question?

My friends civic SI dynoed @ 201 WHP and 147 TQ
I did a run with my 8 with midpipe, intake, and exhaust...
I saw both of his headlights in my rearview mirror..
he did the 1/4 in 14.4
my compression was liike 126-127-127
126-127-127
a rx8 with good compression and healthy is pretty quick....

the rx8 really lacks the power from a standstill. thats why its not that quick in the 1/4.
from a roll, where you can downshift into your 7000rpm powerband, the rx8 can keep up with a lot of cars.
