Series 1 New Engines: Part 1 Please vote!
Been thinking about doing this for a while. The series 2 (and even later model years of series 1) did not seem to have as many engine failures, as indicated by the previous poll thread. This thread is going to try to focus on comparing the number of cars which had to have the original engine replaced to the number of cars which still have the original engine within each model year.
I would have done this in the original thread, but wanted to include every model year available at the time, which meant there was only enough space in the poll for 1 "no engine replacement" option (only 10 potential poll options). If someone feels the need for there to be a series 2 version of this thread as well, please feel free to create it. I don't believe there were any significant amount of series 2 failures to necessitate a thread though.
Please vote if this thread is applicable to you and try to get as many people to vote as possible. Chances are the statistics will be a little inaccurate but the more votes we have, the better.
edit:
IF YOUR ENGINE WAS REPLACED, PLEASE VOTE IN THE PART 2 THREAD!

Also, please fill out RIWWP's survey as well. It will give us a much more comprehensive understanding of the engine problems.

I think they took care of enough of the problem factors to put the failures reasonably on par with par with other engines so it's probably not something of great concern at this point. Series 1 seems to be unanimously recognized as the problem years, so I'll leave it up to someone else if they feel it necessary to have that thread lol.

I agree, the changes to the Series II were significant. Just look at SARX though, almost all of the 04's aside from you had engine replacements. Even Jeremy, Mike, and Ryann's previously owned 04's had engine replacements.

No, not really.
Read any review of the Series II you can find. In any magazine. They'll mention the new grill, the new tail lights, the new tachometer, the new suspension tweaks and the little door for easier dipstick access. The Renesis? All you'll hear is that it would be nice if it had a little more grunt. But significant engine changes? Sorry, you won't read that. Why? Because they're not significant; they're minor.
Living in the land of RX8Club, it's easy to believe Series 1 engines had a serious design flaw resulting in countless engine failures. Truth is, a small percentage of early models had teething problems, many of which were aggravated by owner neglect. The Series II oiling system tweaks simply make an engine with a very small margin of owner error a bit more forgiving. Now, putting off that oil change for a month – or forgetting to check oil level religiously – is not as much of a big deal.
And that's why you don't read about the engine revisions anywhere. Well… anywhere but here, on the internet. Where paranoia and conspiracy theories thrive.
