Severe misfire.

This is my first posting on the club site which I have been watching for 3 months now since buying my RX8 here in the UK.

Bad news my car has now covered 2,800 miles and it has just developed a bad misfire when the engine is taken above 4.000 revs, my car has been in the shop for 3 days now and they have carried out every diagnostic check on sparks, leads, fuelling, compression etc. but they cannot find the cause of the misfire and are now waiting for Mazda technical to advise them about the fault.

The car will start OK and the engine will rev to 4,000 OK but above 4,000 there is a bad misfire with a serious power loss, as you guys are way in front of us with RX8 ownership can anyone come up with any suggestions what could be the cause of the fault.

Thanks

Delanor.

bad gas (er- petrol), bad coil(s), bad pcm off the top of my head are some things to look for. or maybe since they have looked at all the things you say it's not misfire. have they replicated the issue themselves?

Mine has similar symptoms and it turned out to be 2 fried coils.

How was this determined by the dealership (process)?

I had CEL and misfire over 5k. The dealer Mechanic could see from visual inspection the coils were melted. Other 8s with burnt coils have had similar symptoms but on the low end. It's just the other 2 coils.

Hey Zoom 44, West Coast Caravan was something else. Can't wait till next year. Hope you'll be able to get away.

I am assuming that the dealer has checked the obvious parts like plugs and coils etc. as they say that they have checked everything and can find nothing wrong that is why they are waiting for Mazda technical to come up with something.

I must admit with such a bad power loss that is present all of the time I would have thought it would be easy to track down unless it is a fault that they have not come across before, like I said the RX8 is still a fairly new car in the UK especially the Rotary engine which is not very common as the RX7 was not that popular in the UK so I am looking for similar symptoms from other owners that may have had the same fault.

Wierd...I had a sort-of similar problem today. From a standing start with an auto shift. Rev'd to 6K in first then it autoshifted to second. The RPM dropped to 4K and there was no power. It sputtered for a sec or two and then evened out. Drove home fine after that but I didn't rev past 4K either (wanted to make it home).

I am guessing bad gas or a transitory problem. We shall see...need to rev it up tomorrow and see if the problem has gone away. Makes me worry though.
