shifting clunk

shifting clunk
Any of you get a noisy ‘fairly loud’ clunk when shifting sometimes?
Happens up or down shifting.
Or does the 8 just have a noisy gear box.
I did not see (or missed) other posts on this matter.

Yes a MT and the clunk. 'for a better word' happens not just into first but between 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd or even 3-4 or 4-3
And not ever time, mostly it is fairly quit. All other MT I have ever used were very quiet and smooth to shift.
So maybe it's just a noisy mt on the Rx-8

The tranny on the 8 is less than admirable. It does perform well for me at higher RPM's.....but mine actually GRINDS going into second (mostly) when cold. Have been to the dealer many times with this issue, but (of course) they "cant seem to reproduce the concern"
I too have the clunk you refer to.....I believe it is normal.
Enjoy your car,
Jeff

I heard the same clunking before I got used to driving my car. You are probably reaming on your synchro mesh. Try double clutching. Also, when shifting you should match RPMs with the gear ratio to the one you are shifting from. Once I started doing this, the tranny works fine, no problems.

I have found that I have experienced less of all that is mentioned after changing the tranny and diff fluids to synthetics (I used Redline). It took a couple of hours after work. Do a search if interested. Plenty of DIY info on this site. Shifting is very smooth now, even when cold (or as cold as it gets this time of year in NC).

The ratios should be on this forum somewhere. Here is an easy way to find out. Go to a speed in 1st gear, say 20 mph. Note your RPM. Shift to 2nd, make sure that you are going 20mph and check your RPM again then you have your ratio. You can do this for all gears. If you get it exactly right, you don't even need to use the clutch at all (not recommended.
