Shifting into reverse
Is it just me but just bought a rx-8 and why is it so hard to get it into reverse..is that normal just to move it across? Had a celica before and it was never that hard to put it into reverse. Just wondering if there made that way for a safety issue. thanks

yeah I go all the way to the right but its hard to get it to reverse it wont go all the way and keeps ending up in 6th. I have to push it really hard over and then down into reverse. I never had a car that was that hard to get it into reverse like that>>> any suggestions???

push DOWN on the shifter. as in, push it down towards the ground...then move it all the way to the right and back towards the rear of the car. read the manual...
how do you buy a car without knowing how to drive it?

push straight down, as in put your hand on top of the shifter then push like you are trying to push it down through the floor, not towards the back of the vehicle, then all the way to the right, then towards the back of the car. sometimes it is a little hard to put it into reverse if the synchros arent lined up quite right, if that is the case, try putting it into first gear, then reverse.

ok listen, you push the shifter down to the ground it will sink in and then you move it over to the right and shift down. not over to the right and then down.
you are to push it to the ground then slant it to the right and then pull it down parrallel to the ground towards the rear of the 8

0. put the gear box in NEUTRAL.
1. right foot down on the brake, left foot down on the clutch.
2. key in ignition, start up the car.
3. PUSH DOWN on the shifter **** so that it's depressed. (you'll be able to feel it.).
4. gently pull the **** all the way to all the way to the right, then pull it back.
5. release the brake (right foot), and gently let up on the clutch (left foot).
if after doing all this u still don't get it, then drive (or push) the car back to the dealer and have them teach u in person how to do it.

If you don't understand this and can't answer if you are doing this, then please do us all a favor and drive an automatic Toyota Camry.

joystick dirrections ( right, left, back, foward, you don' need up cause it will rip the joy stick out, and finally down....
so first goes down maintaine pressure as you go right then back the more you practice the better you ll get at it. look just keep trying it will be come easyer with time, hope that helps

1. there are no adjustments on the shifter. the dealer can only hope to correct operator error
2. those of us who have had the shifter out know that you only have to press downward before moving the lever to the right. once the lever is down and to the right, the tang on the shaft is under the lockout plate and you don't have to apply downward pressure anymore, just pull rearward.

Sometimes it doesn't go all the way into reverse and when i let the clutch out it just grinds, I've found that if i keep pulling back while letting the clutch out it will pop into gear.
Does that sound like a bent shift fork? I've been wondering about that becuase I have to be pretty concentrated on my 1-2 shifts to avoid grinds... i have an 06 so that 04' tsb means nothing to me

Ok you guys don't have to be asses...the thing is hard to get into reverse sometimes no matter how hard I push now the damn thing won't go into reverse without my "trick" otherwise I get the grinding noise that lets you know its not engaged....
If you try to put the car in reverse and it doesn't feel like its completely set....then hold the clutch in and keep pressing the shifter down and back...slowly let the clutch out while still pressing the **** down and back and it will pop right into place...no more grinds annd easy as pie...
