shifting without clutch?

It is very easy on big trucks. As noted, most big trucks, the clutch is for first gear. I have done it on some cars, but hesitate to do so on my 8. The reasoning, is that, at least to me, the broader the RPM range, the harder it is. On a 3300 redline diesel, it is easy. On a Mazda 6 it is tougher, and an 8 is even tougher. The key is to get the motor and tranny spinning at the same speeds. When done CORRECTLY, it puts the least wear and tear on the drivetrain.
Similar question. I notice that when doing normal drivign type of shifts it is the smoothest to push the clutch in half way. How much excessive wear does this place on the clutch?

Only when you hear grinding and missing iswhen it starts to become a issue syncros are the main thing to be worried about as long as your timing your shifts right there is no extra wear.

So if yoiu smoothly shift gear-to-gear with HALF a clutch pedal, it is fine, correct? I understand there will be now wear to the synchro's and gears if done smoothly, but is the clutch slipping the whole time?

While I had thought about it before, I never tried it with my 8 until reading this post. I used to have an old 4speed volvo I never clutched on, but the 8's RPM range scared me.. and I didnt want to grind any gears.
Recently, I tried dropping it out of gear and found once the RPM range is right it will just fall out. About then the RPMs drop properly to slide it right into the next gear. I've done it for 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 so far. Pretty easy and there's zero grinding or synchro spinup. I was really suprised how cleanly the shifts happen without the clutch.

I used to do this in my old Plymouth Arrow (Mitsubishi product) all the time. The clutch cable was constantly wearing-out due to poor routing design, and whenever it broke I had to go clutchless until I got a new cable. My old Ford Ranger PU would do it with the 5-speed in there as well. I DON'T do it in my 8.

I always had to make sure that I never stopped on an uphill grade, or had to shift on an uphill grade. You can only shift clutchless in a no-load situation and the starter/battery wasn't strong enough to get you rolling uphill.
Starting downhill was a breeze!
After the clutch cable broke twice (it frayed at the feed-through on the firewall), I bought myself a BN 1980 RX-7. My brother started driving the Arrow.

i only did it to an test drive car rx8, but only take it out of gear off throttle and maybe only upshift in light traffic w/o clutch. but chances are, i'm just gonna stop clutchless completely. my honda seem to hold up well, but there is still chance that the synchros don't line up timely if using in higher rpms. i will not take that chance. i'd rather clutch in 1-4 synchro gears and clutchless on 5-6.
i don't know if it was because i was driving customer's cars, but i find myself very confident clutchless shifting in S2000's.
anyway...if anyone's to experiment, i'd keep it under 4k to be safe.

Always under low RPM do i do it at higher revs and high speeds its just too hard to mach up the shifts and you have to be real quick about it too much risk
