Shopping for a ride.

I'm hoping to get some feed back on what you guys think of the RX8. I am the proud owner of a 91 Acura Integra right now and I just love that car. My problem is I want something long haul and the 4 door Idea not only looks great to me but makes sense for expansion for family down the road. Is the 4 seater actually usable? I read your posts on the satisfaction poll and it seams like fuel mileage and rough idle are an issue even though some tests on the engine claim specificaly less vibration over a piston engine. I wanted to ask the guys who know from experience cause this is the only car right now that I would consider driving other than an Integra/RSX. Any other suggestions would be welcome. So all your feed back would be awsome......Thanks guys!!

Rough idle is not an issue for me (no rough idle at all). The only vibration is in the stick while it's in neutral, and that's only if you put your hand on it.

4 seats are pretty usable. I can sit comfortably behind my driver's seating position, and I'm 5'11". Not the tallest, but your kids will have a ton of room. I had a booster seat in my rear seat once and that fit fine. Search this forum for child seats, that should answer your family questions.

The car actually has more headroom in the back seats than an Acura RSX that I was in. The car seats have more room than what it looks like.. the rear doors are easy to operate.

Make sure you like the amount of power it has... get the 6sp MT.

The backseat is absolutely usable, especially if its just kids you plan on putting back there.

If you liked the Integra, you will love the RX8. I spent considerable time in an Integra back in the day.

The fuel mileage will hurt you a little but it is well worth it. Give it a test drive and you will see what I mean. Awesome bang for the buck!

The back seats are useable--this past friday I was the driver for the club excursion--3 dudes in the RX8. I'm 5'11" the passenger was about 5'9" the rear passenger 5'11" as well--so its ample room.

i'm 6'5", and i have driven myself and 3 other grown men between 5'5" and 6'0". its probably not comfortable for long trips but for kids it would be fine. besides, you'll be driving, who cares about how the passengers feel?

Ive done a few trips with 4 adults (all 5'8" and above) and it was great, no complaints and the car still drove well.

I can tell you the RSX back seat is horrile, its hard to get into, like most 2+2 coupes and if your over about 5'8" then you head hits the top of the roof/back window.

Also if you are taking a lot of bags with you, the RSX gets full pretty quick and you can tell your carring a lot of stuff in it. With the RX8 you can load it up with people and stuff, its not to cramped and still drives well.

The pass thru on the RX8 is nice, but I think split fold seats would have been cool.

I've had 4 adults in my 8, no complaints. When my mom rode in the back, she gave it praise.

I've had zero rough idle problems.

Go test drive one. But beware, you may leave the dealership with a new car.

Yes, as Go48 said... Test drives are dangerous... Afterwards you will question why not every car
has a rotary (Wankel) engine.

The rough idle is normal for a rotary, but it will reward you with absolute smooth and vibration-free revs
all the way to 9000...

Again, be warned.... you might fall in love forever...

What rough idle?

'05 here, and the only NVH issue whatsoever is if you grab the stick while in neutral - and that's just my 8 reminding me it's already running.

I've never driven a more fun yet civilized car. The balance between the two on this vehicle is incredible.

Thanks for the input guys. I've refrained from visiting the dealership up till now knowing that a car salesman is a car salesman and all you're gonna get is a positive view so as to make a sale. Now that I've heard from real owners I think I may need to go have a little fun in an 8. As for the RSX back seat. I'd have to agree. The other weakness the car has from the front doors back is rear view blindspots! I could seriously loose a transport truck out the back. And this morning I went down to the car and it seams someone else in my building shares my interest but is a little further along, brand new silver 8 looking at me, begging to go for a rip. That bastard! Thanks again.

If you have a pulse, and it sounds like you do (), once you test the 8 you'll be hooked.

However, there is a blind spot regarding rearward vision in the 8, too. The rear window is raked steeply and is narrow, the rear windows are small, and the pillars between the front and rear doors are wide.

My previous car was an 03 RSX Type S. Great, solid car.

The RX-8 handles really well. But, the engine is as inefficient as it gets. The only significant positive thing is its weight. It is very light and so helps the balance of the car. This car seats 4 people more comfortably than the RSX. But, the RSX has a lot more usable space in the back because of its hatchback design. Rough idling - yes on both the cars. But, the RX8's shifter vibrates all the time. And no, it is not just my car, I noticed it on all the cars I test drove. After all, no car is perfect...

Both are very good cars. Depends on what's more important to you. Either way, you will not go wrong.

One thing I've noticed about the 8 is a really stiff clutch in 1st. I've only driven 2 8's, one an 04' and my 05'..... but I actually kill the engine once every blue moon shifting into 1st.

It's really a bitch trying to ease it smoothly into 1st without giving it a bit of a rev.

Of course sometimes that's part of the appeal

I currently own an RSX. I went for a test drive of the 8 two days ago. I found the rear seat just fine in the 8, verses cramped in the RSX. The 8 is much tighter feeling than the RSX. I didn't notice all that much difference in off the line accelleration between the two, but I don't / didn't romp on it all that much in either machine. Don't get me wrong, the RSX has served me well. But.....
