should i get the warranty? new owner of 2004 rx8

Hey all,

I'm pretty stoked about my new rx8 as I bought it from a Mercedes Dealership. it sits at

18500 miles on the clock
2004 rx8 GT, winning blue
1 owner before me, clear title.

anyway, i asked before hand if they did warranties and they said no, however they offered a 4 year/ 40,000 bumper to bumper warranty for $1370.

this seems like a good deal but in my head there are some considerations:
- there's already a powertrain warranty on our rx8's?
- how often does anything break down, on a new car, in terms of outside the maitanence. Of course this is a mixed questions.

What's covered in the bumper to bumper:
Engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axle, transfer case, cooling.
Steering, brakes, electrical, fuel delivery (fuel pump), brakes, electrical, front and rear suspension, and enhanced electrical (basically all the little switches)

so really i'm typing my thoughts out... I know I'll feel stupid if i dont get it so really; just wanting some rx8's owners opinions.

THOUGHTS?

Thanks for reading! i'm stoked as a new rx8 owner and the car looks sooo fine!

Hey man im in the DFW area too and i just bought a rx8 and have already used the warranty but the bumper to bumper warranty on an 04 will already have expired. Personally if i was you i would not worry about it because i personally am pretty mechanically inclined and if i had to i would be comfortable with replacing parts.

Good luck and you will love the car

Kind of offtopic but you wouldnt happen to have a carfax account right now would you?

Naw, i'm actually Houston but i got the rx8 from Dallas, w00t.

the 4 year warranty is not a Mazda warranty but this mercedes dealership. (they said mercedes dealership in Houston would be applicable) yeah, thats the thing too. i'm not afraid of fixing my car so i feel im insulting myself by getting it but at the same time i'd be comfortable.

ahhhhhhhhh

find out if the warranty which they are selling to you is mazda warranty or is it from some warranty company. the reason why i am asking you to find out is because a friend of mine bought an rx7 from a dealer with a warranty and got screwed over. a couple of months later there were some problems with his motor and tranny, so he brought it in to a mazda dealer for service. the mazda dealer told him that the warranty he purchased is not a mazda warranty which means they would need to get it inspected by this warranty company to determine if his car is covered or not. to make a long story short... what happen was he waited for over 2 months to get his car fixed and he ended up having to pay $4,500 out of his pocket because they said some parts and labor are not covered (and you should know how much dealers charge for hourly labor...). i am not sure what kind of warranty is your dealer offering you but its always nice to be cautious before you get scammed. just to give you a heads up

remember that your car engine internals has a factory warranty of 8years or 100k miles, powertrain, not sure of the years but i believe 60,000 miles the bumber to bumper was 4 yrs 48,000 miles(?) so you need to see when the car was first "put" on the road and the warranty goes from when the first owner bought the car....you may still have factory b2b warranty.....either way i personally would not buy an extra bumper to bumper and u already have engine internals and powertrain from the factory

From what I've read around here, aftermarket warranties are usually worthless...

On the flip side, I bought a 93 RX-7 in 2001 and decided to get the aftermarket warranty. Had to have the engine replace just a few months later and the warranty covered almost everything. I had to pay a couple hundred dollars for things not covered, but nothing compared to a full engine replacement. Note: I had a rotary specific shop do the work, not a Mazda dealership (between the end of sales of the 7 and tech training for the 8, dealerships were notoriously bad at working on rotaries).

The 2004 has pretty low miles, and the engine will be covered for 8 years / 100,000 miles, but if a BTB would make you feel safer, I would probably not get it from the Mercedes dealship unless you make sure before hand that your local Mazda dealership will honor it (the way you made it sound above, only other Mercedes dealerships would honor it?).

Congrats on the new ride.

yeah, i def. need more details on WHAT dealerships are going to work on the car.

with all the issues (besides flooding, the tranny issues) i've been reading on the site, i think i'd feel "safer" with this.

but, it all depends on tomm's call.

thanks for replies.
