It seems most the sky falling stuff was for the 2004-2005 models with a few early 2006s.
But its the car I liked the best by far, and scew you guys! If I join you all in the New Engine club then so be it.... I have a Baby Lambo I can always drive around.....
To bad its the remote control version.
Also to note.... the only other car I really wanted was the Esprit. But the 2004s are still very expencive. I wish they didnt discontinue that car.... it was a blast to drive, one of the best yet.

Just because a car is rare doesn't = collector car in the future. There has to be a demand for the car and as much as I love the RX-8 I don't see it ever being a collectors item.
And on another subject. I've noticed many of you guys say you are happy the 8 doesn't sell well or could be going away one day. Because this makes your car more "rare" and "unique." As a rotary fan and Mazda fan I want this car to be a success and help keep the rotary alive in the future for another RX-8 and RX-7. And if you think having a rare car that didn't sell well is a good thing then in about 10 years you won't think so. Try getting Mazda parts for a car that didn't last long after a few years.

I'm not sure that any Japanese cars have really become collector cars. Sure, some have become desirable, Datsun 240Zs for example, but that's not really collector status. About the closest thing the Japanese have to a collector car is the Toyota 2000GT.

i think you mean more the lines of say a toyota supra......these cars are made for speed....( if you know how to drive this is a very very fast car) so i would say when they get cheaper and all the boy racers get them at least half will be in the junk yards in about 5-10 years..

I was behind one yesterday. The paint was all peeling off and when I passed it on the freeway the side was all smashed and scraped up like they hit a guardrail or something. Had stickers on it too. 
The guy driving looked to be late teens early 20s. It also had a lot of black smoke coming out its exhaust. Not a very well taken care of car to say the least.

Some cars become collectors items because they were common but are now rare -example Model T Ford
Some cars became collector items because they were rare and costly - Rolls Royce
Some cars became collectors items because of their history and style - Delorians and Edsiles
Some cars became collectors items because common, or rare, expensive or cheap, they had some style or appearance that exemplified a decade, and is so classic that it endures the test of time - Port hole Buicks, Red and White Chevys, Corvettes, some Mustangs, etc.
It is in the eye of the beholder. But, based on the way that people respond to an RX-8 - this car has very good potential. It's comparative rarity, unusual engine, etc. will contribute. You will know when it has become a classic when #1. The cost of a used one stablizes. #2. The cost of a used one increases #3. People begin searching for one and have difficulty finding one. #4. Owners realize what they have, and begin to act accordingly. The very fact that people are discussing this about a new car, right now, is an indicator of future value.
It is probable that in the future people will use different fuels, but gasoline did not make a Stanley Steamer any less of a museum peice, and an old V-8 Buick got only about 12 miles to the gallon.
All I know is I am holding tight to this one - how many people say that about a Honda?
