So, I FINALLY pulled the trigger...
I've been looking at RX8s for what feels like forever, but I was never able to get one because I had serious negative equity with my Scion Tc (turns out trying to get a super low payment by extending the loan period out as long as possible has some negative consequences ).
Well, I was browsing my local dealer inventories just out of curiousity and came across one that had a Velocity Red 2007 Touring with a manual transmission. It didn't say how much they wanted for it, though.
Having just test driven a Mustang yesterday, I was in a car-buying mood, so I figured "what the hell! Might as well take a look at it and see how much they want". So, I drove over to the dealership this morning (glad they were one of the few that's actually open on Saturdays!) to check it out.
At the dealership, it was on this big stand in the middle of the showroom in all its glory. With a huge sign that said reduced from $30K to $25K. I know that's not nearly as good a deal as some folks get, but it was more than enough to wipe out my negative equity and then some. And I knew that I just had to have it . (Yeah, I know impulse buying something as expensive as a car isn't a smart idea but I'm weak that way ).
Suffice it to say, four hours later, I drove out of there with my new RX8.
I originally wanted silver, but the red (which I, have to say, I used to not like) was my second choice. And it already had the rear spoiler installed, which I wanted.
Can someone tell me, though, why in the nine hells is the spare tire mounting kit $400--and it doesn't even come with the freakin' spare tire? Can you say
I had to have it, though, because I have terrible luck with tires. I've gotten a flat every year for the past five years (thank you crappy Michigan roads) so there was no way I was just going to rely on some fix-it kit.
Anyway, besides that little bit of sticker shock, I've very happy with my purchase so far. I was going to post some pics, but when I got home and got my camera out of the closet, the battery was (of course) dead. Maybe tomorrow.
So, in summary: Yay, me!!

congrats!
the dealership raped your wallet on the spare tire kit. you can buy one off the forum members for $100 or less and im pretty sure the standard retail on the spare tire kit is $250. the extra $150 might be for the install. which is again, excessive. (its only 4 bolts for the crossbeam and the tire attaches to that.)
also, it doesnt come with one to keep the weight down. the lighter a car is, the more fun it is to drive.

Congrats. The bad thing about the spare is that there is no room for one. When you put it in, your trunk us useless. There was no room (I don't think) in the floor for Mazda to have designed it to go there.

Where'd you get the $250 number though? I have the official price list from Ford's internal web site and it says that suggested retail on the tire kit is $395.
Also, I'll probably appreciate the extra weight back there when I'm driving in the winter.

Thats what i traded in for my rx8 as well. I was drooling over the RX8's since they first came out, but knew i couldn't afford one. So i ended up buying a brand new 05 Scion TC. (which still to this day, i think is one of the best cars for the money). But i test drove 8 or 9 dif. RX8s just thinking bout trading in my scion for it.. but it was never a good idea financially cuz i didn't want to carry anything over to the next car from it. So then one beautiful presidants day.. 2 months ago.. my brother went to go upgrade his Mazda 3 at one of the mazda dealerships near us. He went with a friend of ours who very much was aware of my obsession with the 8. So i get a phone call from them telling me that there is an 04 rx8 with 30,000miles with the gt package. I drove down with my friend as soon as he came back with my bro. needless to say, i finally found the deal i was looking for. Drove it home that nite and was extremely happy.!!!! i still cant get enough of it.. i love driving it.
And by the way, even when i owned my tc, people would ask me if i liked it.. and i would tell them, "ya, its a great car for the money" theyd ask if i was happy with it and the answer was a mixed sorta... lol Y they ask.. It's not an RX8
but now i got it!!!

I agree, the Tc is a great car for the money. Decent performance, pretty good interior, good stereo, good gas mileage, nice looks, etc.
I test drove it against the Civic Si, and the Tc was way better (that's before they released the new model Civic, though).
But, yeah, no way does it compare to the RX8. I find it hard to believe that any front-wheel drive car could.
