So I have decided to join the family! Have a few trading in Qs.
Well my brother got a RX-8 and I have decided to get one my self. Problem is I have a 07 FJ Cruiser.
The KBB for the FJ is at 22,500 now the RX8 that I am looking at is for sale for 16,999...
What will happen if I trade it in? Will I loose even more? I already lost 10,000 of the bat

If I were you, I'd look for an 07 rx8 and trade the FJ in on that.. Tell them pay off the truck, and finance the car outright. Thats what I did. I had an 05 Gt Mustang, owed 23800, and they were only going to give me 23300. I laughed literally. Basically I told them, pay it off or no deal on the 06 that I was wanting. They paid it off.
Besides, most of the bugs are out of the newer ones as well.

I agree, any time you trade down like you are talking about you will take a big hit. Try to trade for a more even deal if you can find a car that suits you in that price range. If not you might try to sell your car outright first. That is a pain but you will come out better if you are able to do that. Good luck!

Well here in California those FJ cruisers are being hit $3000-4000 back of book. Meaning that the dealership is going to offer you $3-4k back of WHOLESALE trade in value, not the higher retail price.
Last FJ we took in on trade they guy lost over $14000 in less than 6 months. And we are a Toyota store, we can certify the thing and get top dollar for it.
Sell your car yourself, it will get you an extra $5000 at least.

MSRP is 27k I think, but they will come waaay down since the new model is coming out and 8s sell slow. With your FJ in the picture you should come pretty close to what you are paying now, I think.
here is the current offer they have, but that is just an idea...
2008 RX-8 $3,000 Customer Cash (1) OR
1.9% APR for up to 60 MONTHS (2)

FJ's are not selling well. I got sick of the manager telling us to sell more of them. They get bad gas mileage and take premium. As a result, the trade in value has been dropping. But, 8's are not flying off the lots either. A used car will typically have $4-5,000 in mark-up.
Look up the kbb trade in on the 8 and ask for that price and ask for kbb trade in on your Toyota. The salesman will get very irritated, but stand your ground. Unless they tried too hard to make a deal, they should be behind book on the 8. Of course, they will want to be behind book on the FJ. Don't let them know you want the car. Stand your ground. When they won't come down anymore, you usually have the lowest price. If you really want, go home. A good salesman will call you and at that time you will see if they can come down more.
The easiest way to do all this is to go on-line and submit inquiries to at least 3 dealers. Let them fight for you. You will get a decent price without having to go in and deal with all the face to face crap.

^You know what you are talking about, but I would add that you should not bring up how much you owe on your FJ unless you know it will help, otherwise, they will try and only give you what you owe.
