Uh, this may be a silly question but instead of tapping away on the keyboard here why don't you go down and pop off the engine cover? Not that it's any of my business.

Here's a pic with the cover off. But if you have time to read this, you have time to open the hood and lift off the cover!

It helps keep the engine clean from road dust.

remove cover to add oil...

You must take off the main cover to add your oil - if you've driven over 500 miles surely you may be wanting to add some. Please at least say you've checked the level if you've driven over 100 miles?!

that's great! I drive at least 90 miles any one day I drive it to work. The deal with the pressure gauge (it's in another thread of course) is that the gauge is in reality a 'dummy light' - if you have any pressure it looks the same as any other amount of pressure. In other words it's not reflecting the amount of oil or pressure but the presence of a minimal amount of pressure - you'd probably have to be a coupe quarts low, at least, to lose all presence of oil pressure so it can in no way be used as a guide to oil level...

which reminds me again - has anyone determined if we can get a real oil-pressure sending unit thingie for the Renesis??

A. It's shows oil pressure, not quantity
B. It's not a gauge, it's an idiot light in drag
C. Check your oil

I agree with the need to check and add oil, but I do both without removing the engine cover.

how do you add oil without removing the cover? do you have a custom cover? or do you not use the fill-hole (not proper name...the opening underneath the yellow cap)?

Sorry, my bad... it was a dumb comment. I haven't had to add oil yet (after 2200 miles, still nearly topped off.) I thought I recalled seeing the fill cap with the engine cover on, but I was wrong. Still, I can reach the dipstick without removing the cover. It'd be tough if you've got beefy hands.

I've had real trouble reading the dip stick. The oil seems so clear I have to feel for the wet spot. I suppose as the oil gets used and darker I'll be able to see it better.

But then it will be time to change it

Like others here, I have not had to add oil yet -- when I check it always looks full. I have almost 900 miles on my RX-8. Now I'm wondering if I'm reading the dipstick correctly.

Don't worry, pretty soon the oil light (just above the cruise light) will show and you'll think: "what the hell" than check the oil and see you're half way between the marks.

There was another thread about this earlier

Tilt it at an angle under good lighting, and you should be able to see the level. Good lighting is key. I have to use a drop light in my garage - at least until I get the mondo duo-flourescents installed. Makes a real PITA to Zaino in the garage at night, too.
