Someone broke my rear window
So I went to Publix last night to pick up a couple things and left the store at 7:31 according to my receipt. I probably made it home around 7:45 or so. After a little Chinese food and an episode of Big Brother, I walked outside for a few minutes to catch some fresh air and observe my 8 after a good washing earlier in the day.
The first thing I noticed was that the dew has already set on the roof of the car making it look hazy. When I looked a little closer, my eye caught some debris laying on the trunk and I was like "what the...?" That's when I looked at the rear window and saw that it looked all pixelated. I got a bad feeling in my stomach and a second later, my eye found the "impact point" and confirmed my fears.
My rear window is busted. It looks like a rock hit the window and bounced up and pit a nick in the roof too. I think it was a rock because of some concrete-like powder near the impact that I saw this morning. I looked around the area of suspected trajectory and found nothing. I had an officer come out and take a report and he was pretty nice, but didn't say much.
Any guesses as to the repair bill?
Also, recommendations for repair shops in the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood area would be appreciated.

many insurance policies offer glass coverage where you do not have to pay your deductible. contact your insurance claims department, they can look it up in a heartbeat whether or not you're covered w/o a deductible to pay.
and change that deductible amount to $500. anything really happens, and 500 bux out of your pocket is much easier to live with than $1000.

Thanks for the feedback. I left a message for my agent and they'll probably call me back tomorrow. I'll see what they say. I'm not sure if the rear glass is covered or not, but the rep that answered the phone said I would have to file a claim to find out. I got a quote from Safelite AutoGlass for $725. I need to get it tinted too, but that shouldn't cost too much....

glass claims typically cover all glass, including the rear window. it may be a little different for the RX8, as the antenna is housed in the rear window which equals an increase in cost. Your insurance company might have an exclusion in your policy stating you're **** out of luck
Safelite, though, is a great company to purchase through. Very high quality glass, good pricing. I am a claims adjuster for a large insurance company, and they are who we use for all of our glass claims.

Thanks for the info, Huskyfan. Sounds like I'll probably be paying for the scratch and maybe the antenna, but hopefully not the glass too.
I could tell from the Safelite website that these guys know what they are doing. In fact, they're the only place that answered the phone when I called around this morning. Also, their online quote matched the over-the-phone quote which is always a good thing.

It could be close depending on the cost of the rear glass. I've had my windshield replaced twice due to flying rocks. Cost atleast $400 each time.

I don't think it will apply in this case as this is vandalism....not your average rock being kicked up from the road claim. Also there is other damage to the vehicle. Some compaines tend to waive deductibles for windshield claims (small chip caused by flying object) but only if there is no other damage to the vehicle. This appears to be an intentional act by some low life that needs a swift kick in the A$$. From looking at the pics repairs should fall shy of your 1K deductible anyway. There is about 1 hr repair time on the roof, about another 2 hrs for refinishing the roof, about .6 hrs to remove the roof moldings, cost of the back glass, urethane kit, new back glass molding if it is not reusable and a litte time for glass cleanup.

I brought my work computer home this weekend, and I just did the calculations. They are:
Roof: 1.0 hour repair
2.5 hours refinish
R & I (remove and install....required when painting): right and left mouldings (.3 hr each) , headliner (2.0 hrs).
Back Windshield: Quote from safelite for $725. Safelite includes labor in their glass......they should install it themselves.
Grand total at insurance labor rates: $1150
Grand total at consumer labor rates: approx $1400
Either way, you're out your $1000 deductible. Go through your insurance.....they will cover the remainder of it. My advice for the future....lower your deductible. For Comprehensive coverage, the cost-to-you difference between a $1000 ded and a $250 ded will cost you about $70 bux. it's the collision coverage deductible that makes the huge difference.

You are absolutely correct regarding the other damage....guess I didn't look closely at the pictures at all. His deductible will apply.

I was in the ball park. I didn't feel like grabbing my Mitchell laptop. What system do you use... CCC or ADP.

Excellent advice. I just checked my policy online and realized that I could go to $0 deductible for only $86 a year.

Do they charge extra to come out? Forgive my complete laziness in looking that up myself...

As far as I know they do not have any option besides them coming to you. To me it wouldn't make much sense for a company that big to have shops everywhere. This way they have one or two guys in major cities. No shop...No overhead...just a place to ship things.

And as for safelite, safelite installs all of their glass. You can't just buy the glass and install it yourself....that's what makes them so great. Doesn't cost you a penny and they come out to you and install it in literally like an hour.

Hey, glad I could help out! A lot of people don't realize that it's virtually nothing in terms of price to lower or eliminate your deductible for comp coverage. They think it's a huge cost issue, which it isn't.
