Update: Good News and Bad News
The safelite guy came by this afternoon and finished up just before it started to sprinkle.
The good news is that I was able to claim the damage as glass-only and insurance covered with no deductible.
The bad news is that the technician left some pretty nasty scratches on my 8! I have an appointment tomorrow with the shop manager so we'll see how it goes. Also, there's a bunch of glass pieces sliding around above the trunk area that I can hear everytime I make a turn. I'll be checking the DIY section to figure out how to get in there.
Next up, find a good tint shop and a good body shop. *sigh*

Those are some nasty gashes. First time I have ever heard of a bad Safelite experience. Strange to hear that you got glass in your trunk lid. I would think it would be sealed enough so that wasn't possible. Just to save you some headaches make sure to take that picture of your back window that showed the trunk with no scratches.

sorry to see your car got damanged, that really sucks!
I sometimes wish I'd have caught the guy who keyed my last but then again, jail time doesn't sound like much fun.

Yeah the window looks great. Unfortunately, I read the DIY for getting to the rear speakers so I could remove all the loose glass and I'm not looking forward to that (taking out the rear seats??).
Well, no progress today on the damage claim. Hopefully things will start moving tomorrow....

I had a meeting today with the shop manager and he took some pics and said the job was unacceptable. I'm expecting a call from the casualty loss division soon to get these scratches squared away. I just hope something else doesn't end up broken in the process...

Sorry to resurrect this gem of a thread, but I wanted to post the exciting conclusion for completeness:
Safelite owned up to the scratches and asked me to get an estimate. I took the car to the Sawgrass Ford body shop and got the estimate and faxed it to Safelite. They called me back and said everything was good, except that they wanted to handle the glass work (the rear glass had to be removed and reinstalled for the paint work). So, they arranged with the shop to have a Safelite guy handle the glass work, which saved them about $90.
Dropped the car off on a Tuesday morning, but Safelite didn't show up to remove the glass until Wednesday. Then the painter discovered some trim and rockguard that would need replacing so the estimate had to be re-done and re-faxed and re-approved.
The shop proceeded with the paint work on Thursday and was ready by Friday, but Safelite called back and didn't have the necessary seal to re-install the glass in time.
At this point, I asked Safelite for a rental car. I didn't initially ask for one because I was just glad that Safelite was going to pay for the repair, but since it was taking so long, I figured the rental would make them move a little faster.
So I got a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup for the weekend and used it to haul a bunch of camping equipment down to the keys and back which was a lot of fun.
Anyway, Safelite re-installed the glass on the following Tuesday, but the shop manager told me they never showed up. It turns out that poor communication was to blame.
I called Safelite and asked why they didn't show up and they said the glass was already done! So I had to call the shop back and they checked the car and wow, it was done after all. So, the car was ready for pickup Wednesday afternoon.
The shop did a great job with the paint, and the total cost was almost $1000, not including the rental.
In the end, the whole ordeal cost me $50 to re-tint the window and a couple hours to remove the rear seats and vacuum out the broken glass.
I'd actually recommend both Safelite and Sawgrass Ford body shop for the quality of the work and the handling of the incident. The coordination of everything was a huge pain, but worth it in the end!

no way...the rear window is damn expensive!
my uncle had to replace the rear window for his prius one time, it cost him a little over a $1000, cause of the deforster. and dont forget our radio antena is build in the rear window too, so it would be probably more!
btw...im sorry to hear that!

My rear window was busted out this past Friday by some dumb a$$ kids throwing rocks at each other in the parking lot. The window is being replaced at this moment. I will see how it goes. i have a $100 deductible for vandalism. I will just need to find a place to retint my windows. i just hope I catch the kids throwing rocks at each other...I am going to go off on them. Little bastards!!!!!

Also be certain the window is OEM. Here's some interesting info on our rear windows.
"For example, the rear window not only uses
a lightweight material, Mazda’s designers further
shaved weight by altering the surface curve to
allow a reduced sheet thickness. This is just one
example of the extraordinary effort put into weightsaving
measures throughout the car, pushing
weight reduction as far as design limitations
would allow."
