someone please help me

Hi all, I have a problem and im looking for someone to direct me correctly as I think the two dealers I have been to have told me false.

My problem is that I have an intermitting problem at idle. Sometimes my RPM gauge flickers and is not at a constant rpm at idle. Almost all the time but not always, I have a rough idle that causes vibration throughout the car, most noticeably the airbag on the steering wheel.

I have taken my vehicle to two dealerships who say it is normal? I have never experienced this before. What can be causing this?

I have the 2005 rx8 model touring, 56,000 on the clock.

Thank you all! I really appreciate it.

Well.....your RPM will fluctuate a little bit when the A/C compressor kicks on and even when your fans kick on. How much is it really fluctuating? Tell us where it is idling and how much it dips in terms of RPMs. As far as the vibration goes, I doubt it's motor mounts and if you RPM is low enough at idle you will get some shake, so that could be quite a few things. Hopefully someone in Tampa will chime in and give you a good dealership because it could be as simple as plugs, coils, dirty air filter, MAF, etc., or it can get ugly such as a clogged cat or worse. How often do you redlline the car? Are you the original owner? Do you know if 4206 recall was done. Give us more to go on.

Thanks for your response. I redline the car quite a lot as I was told to drive it hard.
I am the second owner. I am giving this problem with and without the ac on. My car usually idles somewhere around 800 rpm but sometimes when i come to a stop it will jump down to 500 and up to around 750-800 and fluctuate around there. As soon as i touch the gas slightly, it stops vibrating.

Im confused, im told its normal but as you can imagine, it gets pretty annoying!!! I have a 'rattle' that comes from underneath the car when the clutch is out, which i know is normal, but it gets worse with the rough idle.

Thanks man, I hope you guys can remedy my issue.

I'm thinking..................but I have an 05 MT Touring and no rattle what-so-ever at anytime. I only have 11k miles, but that's another story. Start searching for rough idle while I think about it and let's see if others jump in as well.

At 56k miles...........I'm gonna bet plugs. How long since they have been changed?
How old are the wires while we are at it. With 56k miles, I would start with the plugs, then take a good hard look at the wires, and then probably the coils.

Oh yeah................are you stock?

Im thinking its probably a dirty MAF sensor , My car has never experienced this problem , so i wouldnt consider it "normal"

Was it doing this before the plugs were changed or did it start AFTER they were done? If so check to see the plug wires are properly connected to both the plug and the coil.

I bought the car not that long ago, but I can remember ever having this issue before I got the plugs changed under the recall. What could be causing this? faulty new plugs? I dont know...

I have an 07 and it did it the second week I got it. I got it with 3miles. The dealer also told me it was normal that it would go away. That it could be the MAF sensor dusty since the car had been on the lot and not really moved. Never had a chance to take it in to the dealer. The begining of week three I went FI.

2nd set??? Do you drive the car that hard or are the mounts that lousy? I had mine replaced in December.... should I expect to have them changed again?

to be honest, I haven't seen very many people needing a 2ndset. I need to get under the hood and take a close look but my gut tells me that they either installed it incorrctly or they only changed one and the other mount is going bad. (need to recheck my paperwork)

Short answer: No, you don't need to plan on getting a 2nd set. We'll chalk this up to 'isolated incident'.

Thank god, I'm now out of warranty! Good Luck with yours... will be interesting to see what root of evil is the cause of your vibrations. I do know my paper work says they changed all three mounts. So far no vibration. Just A thought, if the idle was that rough, could this cause the mounts to give? And another thought... if the mounts are bad, what kinda havoc does that cause on our engines prior to being caught and changed out since the motor tends to rock from side to side?

Guys, I looked at the history of the car. I got recall 4206F done along with 2 trailing spark plugs 4 weeks ago. The rough idle has occurred ever since this service took place. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to turn the car in for inspection, but can anyone give me a rough idea so I dont accept no crap from the dealer?
