Someone Wrecked my 8
So, I was sitting at a light, and it turns green, I let the two cars that were left in the intersection go and I started to pull out,
a woman, with her 2 kids in the car hits me at about 25mph spinning the car 90deg to the right. The airbags did not deploy, my hands never left the wheel, and my head didn't hit anything.
I pull off the road only to find this woman doesn't have insurance, or a license for that matter, it wasn't even her car, and she didn't speak barely a word of english.
fortunatly my insurance kicks ***, Progressive Auto, was simply awsome.
within 2 buisness hours they had determined who was at fault, towed my car to the shop, and put me in a rentacar.
The worst was the weeks wait while It was in the shop, I missed driving it so much
in case any of you are wondering, the damages were $3800.00

Just curious, I had the exact same fear of somebody hitting the side right on those unique suicide doors.
Is that part of the body made of Aluminium or the regular steel? I think Aluminium is harder to repair, especially for small damages, steel, you can knock it back to shape, but aluminium you have to replace it, if im not wrong.
So are they replacing the door or just repairing it?

They replaced all the panels with brand new parts, for about 3800 they replaced the door panel, the back panel, the rim, the suspension strut, and the tire.
The airbags would have deployed if the door had caved in, but from the inside, you couldn't tell there was any damage.
The lady didn't get a fine or anything, the police escorted her home, they claimed that becasue they actually didn't see her driving they couldn't site her.

Where I live we have a lot of migrant farm workers to harvest mushrooms. I was hit by one in early April - same story, barely any English, no license. He produced what appeared to be a notice of insurance under another person's name. Turned out the poilicy did not list the vehicle that hit me on it, So my insurance company is covering me - but under collision. In my state uninsured motorist insurance is mandatory - but - BUT - it only covers medical liability, not property damage. My company is going to take the idiot to court, but heck, if he's an illegal (which I am assuming he is) A) he doesn't have any money to cover the damage and B) he'll probably leave the area and migrate to another transient job.
The troopers at the scene of my accident cited him with tickets for causing the accident, and driving without a license. If they had known the insurance was a fake, he would have gotten another ticket for that. Big deal. I'm out the $500 deductible and since bringing home my 8 on March 23rd, I have had the pleasure of driving it 10 days. 2 car payments, for 10 days worth of driving. arg. Everyone, when hearing about my accident says "well isn't it mandatory to have insurance in PA?" to which I say "yeah, but apparently it isn't mandatory to obey the law either"
good luck, and glad to hear you're ok. The only good thing that came out of this for me is I now have the confidence of knowing that the 8 is a solid car - a hard 15 mph bash to my side (front panel foward of the door) caused no air bag deployment, and no engine damage. In fact I barely felt it - I heard it, and the car looked pretty messed up - but all of the shock was very well absorbed by the body and frame. Good to know in case.....

That's terrible.
I never understood how a car can be uninsured. Up here in Quebec, you can't get a licence plate for the car unless you have a minimum amount of insurance to cover damage to other vehicles.
At least you're OK and the car is repairable.

If you have a "regular" job (on payroll at a company with a Fed Tax ID No) and you are working under a valid SSN # - it is true that the insurance company can take you to court, and obtain a judgement against you for damages paid. If you don't pay the judgement, eventually, the insurance company can go to court and get a wage garnishment.
I know this is true because I process the payroll for our small (27 employees) company, and I currently have two payroll garnishments going - one for an insurance judgement and one for unpaid DMV fees.
It doesn't happen very fast tho' - the accident which caused the insurance garnishment happened over 5 years ago!!!

Easy. People buy a month's worth of insurance when it comes time to renew their registration. Then they let is lapse for the rest of the year betting that they won't get caught. Maybe you should have to prove that you have a year's worth of insurance pre-paid at the time you register.

The lady just gets escorted home with no fines or anything? That sounds like something the lousy Houston Police Department would do. The sad thing is that your insurance will still go up a little since you will be considered a higher risk. If makes no sense to me that insurance companies can raise your rate by claiming you as high risk if you are never at fault. I have Allstate and these guys already think they deserve to keep raising my rate constantly and that I should pay more than many other companies. Don't use them. I used to have USAA and they were much better. It's good to hear that Progressive took care of the problem so quick. I haven't heard much good about them until now.
