Sometimes I don't get it
Around my parts (Detroit-ish), it's the land of American Iron, so I don't see too may 8's around. When I do, I always try to wave or flash my lights or something. Sometime's you get a response, sometimes you don't . But today took the cake. I was sitting at a light and a very clean LY passed in front of me. I waved as he passed, but the dude just stared straight ahead and didn't give me a glance. Oh well, it happens. Light turns green, I pull out and prepare to get on the highway. I see he's getting on the highway as well. Cool, I never get a chance to run with another 8. To my disappointment, he didn't get on it at all. Coulda been drivin' a civic. Well, ok. I pull up beside him to give him a wave and then be on my way. But he NEVER ever looked over at me. Eyes glued straight ahead. Maybe he had really bad peripheral vision. So I pull up a little bit so I know he can see me. I fall back a little and look over to give him a wave and a thumbs up because his car looked VERY nice, stock but nice. Still wouldn't glance over my way. By now my exit was coming up so I had to pull up in front of him into his lane so I could make the exit. Even as I pulled off and he passed me, not a glance. If I see another RX8, I'll about twist my head off watching it as long as I can. I know it's kind of silly to even notice or care if somebody else notices you or not, but I kind of feel there is a specialness about the 8 that leads to a great comradery between owners. I guess some people think it's just another car.
As a side note, while I was driving beside this guy, a modded VR passed going the other way on the highway. I have NEVER seen three RX8's in the same place before around here.

Lol. Right now I'm looking for an 8 but at the moment I have a 1996 Nissan 240SX which is an awesome machine but I just want something a bit newer. Anyway there is a normally a bond between 240 owners as well.

I've tried to say hey to some 8 owners, without much luck. The best I've gotten was about a week after I got my 8, when I saw a new RX-8 at night. Being unfamiliar with the taillights, I thought it looked like a Skyline's, and followed the car a bit. At a stoplight I talked to him for about 30 seconds, and then we both went our separate ways.
Most people seem to want to be locked in their cars, lonely and cocooned from the outside world. So I'm not surprised you don't see more interaction among owners. But I can relate to the guy who didn't look at you somewhat, because I do the same. I assume that this country is full of enough armed, drugged, and slightly mental people to make eye contact with another driver either slightly dangerous, or a sign of aggression.

Yeah sometimes I wave at the guys at local 8 meets and they don't even wave back. Stuck up bastards
Unfortunately many just buy the car based on looks and nothing more. They don't share the love.

I think the best is when they show up at a car meet.... see us out there... and then park on the other side of the lot and ignore you all together
oh yeah and then walk by pointing out what they dont like about your mods

There was another thread round here about this same topic....
I still don't see many 8's in Atlanta and when I do see one I look for clear corners or something but all are stock.

I really enjoyed your story Pendlenton. Here in Baltimore, Murderland I always take the time to wave, blink my tail laights or give thumbs up at other RX-8 drivers. For the most part, I always get an enthusiastic response. I think only "once" someone just looked at me and gave me a blank reaction. Zero. No response.
Now that I think about it, maybe that happened twice. But for the most part, other drivers always appreciate my salute and understand that what we are driving here is a unique machine.
In fact the more I drive the 8 the more I think this is not a car but an "event". The involvmenet you have with an RX (from the high-reving engine to the addition of oil to the constant addition of gasoline) One becomes involved with this car, so other drivers appreciate when they see you driving an 8.
But for the most part, almost every time I get a salute from other 8 drivers..

Huge hole is huge
This reminds me...I was going through Kansas City one day in July, and a VR 8 was driving around *Speeding relatively fast...* and I was playing keep up. The GF in the car was like "They are going to think you're stalking them!" but I reassured her that it's an 8 thing. So while they were pulling towards the offramp, I kept on the interstate, they blinked they brake lights at me a few times. Could have been random braking, but I took it as a "Nice running with you" sign.
