That looks good! The OEM Enkei spare weighs almost as much the OEM stock wheel, how much does that weigh?

Do S1s and S2s use the same bracket?

I just bought a used 2009 with the R3 trim package and am a little sketched out about not having a spare. If someone near Oregon is looking to sell the bracket and/or donut for an S2, please PM me.

That said, I looked in the trunk where the mounting bracket is supposed to go, and that's where the Bose amplifier is mounted! Is there someone here on the boards that has both the Bose sound system option and a spare tire that confirm that they'll both fit? (The local dealership just hired a new parts guy who can't find his äss with two hands. Calling him is useless.)

Also, the RX8 trunk is hardly what I'd call spacious to begin with. It's hard for me to tell from the pics that have been posted how far back the spare sits, how hard it is to get in and out, or how likely it is you'll ever fit anything larger than a toaster into the trunk with the spare mounted there.

I've got a 2010 R3 the spare is an option and it does fit but uses alot of space, the bracket allows the spare to be (hung) on an angle and does not touch the bose amp.

That picture is missing the "A" brackets. They are most likely still attached to the car. People tend to forget they're part of the kit ("B" brackets attach to the "A" brackets, which attach to the car through holes in the lining).

Ooh, good catch. Thanks!

I'm also still not 100% certain whether 2004-08 models use the same mounting bracket as 2009-11. I called the local Mazda dealership with the part number (FE01 V8 360) off the instruction manual and they still couldn't tell me anything useful.

That's what happened to me, the seller traded in his R3 and left the mounts for the bracket with the car, so I just have the spare on the trunk floor; but hey, for $10, why not

It sat in Craigslist for three weeks at $20. When he changed the price for $10, he responded to my email and I picked it up the following morning. I was about to pay $120 for one, also, from a member here the same week. Not mounted, nevertheless, I'm happy I have one.

At the speeds we reach in these cars, I'd never use a plug for more than just getting somewhere to get a new tire. If I ever go on a long trip, I'll think about getting a spare. Until then, I'll just hope nothing happens to my tires. I prefer to have trunk space in case I need it.

I believe no one is selling the optional spare tire in this thread. Use the SEARCH option or go into the FS thread section.

I think the "preferred" spare might be the bright yellow one, because it might be a bit lighter than the others. Harder to find, of course.

Bottom line first: The compact spares from the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 6, model years 2010 forward fit RX8s, at least they fit S1s. I picked up a compact spare from a 2010 Mazda 3 for a total of $11.98 and it fits my 2008 RX8.

Forgive me if this is old news. I once owned an RX7, but I'm new to the RX8, so this word might be well-traveled. In addition to a 2008 RX8, I own a 2010 Mazda 3 Sport. With a tape measure I checked the bolt pattern on my RX8 wheels and the that of the compact spare in my Mazda 3 and they appeared to be the same. So I tried mounting the spare from my Mazda 3 onto my RX8 and it fit (see photo). So I went to an area salvage yard and purchased a compact spare from a Mazda 3 for a total of $11.98. The tire has never been on the ground and does not appear to be dry rotted. When I searched the inventory of the salvage yard online for the spare, the results for a search of that spare also returned Mazda 6s on the yard, so I presume the spares on those Mazda 3s and Mazda 6s are interchangeable.

As to mounting the spare in my trunk, I did it easily and securely with a couple of bungee cords (see the other photo). I hooked the cords in two holes on the upper part of the trunk sort of near the rear speakers in the cabin. I ran the cords in an X pattern under the spare and hooked the other ends in a slot in the aft portion of the upper trunk. For additional secureness, I added two shorter bungee cords running from the center hole of the spare to the same aft slot that in which the longer cords are hooked. I think the first two cords would hold it fine, but I added the other two to tighten things up a little.

I should point out that I got a little noise from the front hooks on the two long cords when I hit a bump. So I went back and put a small, old towel over the front hooks and re-hooked them ( I ran one small towel over both hooks). This eliminated the noise.

Shopping bags still drop into the trunk easily with the bungee-mounted spare in position. But there's no way a suitcase of any size would go into the trunk with the spare sitting where it is. I'll have to put suitcases or coolers on the back seat or remove the spare to haul them in the trunk.

By the way, I would be surprised if this compact spare weighs even 30 pounds. I carried it under one arm out of pick-you-own-part salvage yard and I'm not big guy. Somebody can look up the weight, but I was surprised by how light it is.

One more thing--prior to model year 2010, Mazda 3 spares are 15"-17". From 2010-13, they are 16"-17". From 2014-16, they are 16"-18". Spares for 2009 back might work, but you might want to stick to 2010 forward to be on the safe side.

What does one measure to determine if another 5-114.3mm spare (T135 90 R15 from a 2007 Accord) will fit (from a clearance on the hub) for spare usage?

I bought an OEM stock wheel for $25 on OfferUp. I just need to put a used tire on it and haven't gotten around to it. Most of the time I'm in town and I could just Uber home for the spare, have my wife bring it, etc., lol.

Most annoying thing for me about these cars is the fact that if you want to keep the donut in your trunk, there's no storage space for anything else at all in there. I've been risking it for a while now

It depends on what you want to use it for, I guess.
I've made several 2K road trips.
I find the key is to use duffle bags and small soft coolers. I bring quite a few because I bring KC or Memphis BBQ to my family in Louisiana.
This was with my spare tire in the OEM rack, the small Grizzley cooler just barely fits.
Traveling by myself, using the back seat, I could fit more if I wanted to.
