AT Speed Limiter

I have searched the forums, but I have not found a conclusive answer as to wheiter or not the US AT has the speed limiter at 125mph. I have seen some people say that it is drag limited and others say it is governed.
First post guys. Ive had the 8 for a month now and i'm loving it. :D

All consumer AT cars in the United States are speed limited to about 125, the RX8 is no exception.

Thanks for the quick reply staticlag. Is it electronically limited or is it governed? And if it is electronically limited, are there anything available to bypass this.

Thats not true. I can think of several A/T cars that are faster than 125.

This is the same thing I saw on the rest of the threads. Its really mixed results. Maybe someone could do a survey on this. I would be nice to know if we can really get past 125. I live in the Eastern Ky in the middle of the Appalician Mountians, Not a lot of safe places to really open it up. But I have a lot of fun hanging the turns :D

"Consumer" is the key word. I can think of a couple too, but they are over $45K

Anyways, i have a MT so I'm just going off what I have read:

"My car in 3rd gear topped out at 125mph on the dyno. Can't remember if I tried it in 4th but I would assume since I did a fully automatic run that it would have topped out in 4th as well and I can only remember reaching 125mph."

Many other people claim that they were "nearing" 125 with the car still pulling. But electonically limited cars do that, then they stop pretty near 125. 125 is a pretty arbitrary #, there is no law or regulation that says cars must be limited, its just that car companies choose to set their AT cars at a speed deemed "high enough" which is ususally around the 120-130 range.

Cops or World's Wildest Police Videos would really be interesting if all consumer cars were not electronically limited

I bet you think an automatic Corvette is limited to 125 too.

Still not true--I've had my Millenia S over 125--its top speed is reportedly 140mph. I can still think of several A/T cars that are not limited to 125 under $45K.

More info on this would be helpful or is this info hiding in a thread about an associated topic?

my AT topped out at 125mph on the dyno with 135hp to the wheels. I bet if I had more more rpms to play with then I would have more mph and hp. I think it is designed to cut off at 125mph to keep from blowing the tranny. cheap *** tranny.. not trying to steal the thread but does anyone know of an aftermarket torque converter to replace the stock one that will allow for higher rpms and more torque for quicker acceleration?

well--it could benefit from a higher stall speed for quicker acceleration. Level 10 builds trannies--it would have to be a custom built unit so maybe you should give them a call.

... has anyone ever had a Shinka over 125mph before? I'm not sure what you'd call it as far as "packages" go... but it's definitely something else as far as feel of the car goes

the 4 port engine cant breath any more above about 7400 so there is no point in getting one that allows for higehr rpm

the g35 goes over 125 its way under 45k and so does the 350z and what not... i Dont think u can outright say that all consumer AT are limited. maybe just stupid american cars cuz theyre afraid itll blow up after 125 or they dont trust any who would buy an american car with speeds of over 125... just look at nascar

Even still--the Charger and 300 have a higher top speed than 125. Mustangs aren't limited to 125. Auto Z28 and SS Camaros weren't limited either. This is a bogus claim.

A Friend of mine said to turn on the hazard lights and it may disable the speed limiter. I dont think it's that simple but i figured i would ask

Ok then, I'll change my claim: 95% of american consumer cars.
