You're a columbian drug lord??!! Lucky bastard!!

It's an interesting point. Routine testing with a higher required passing grade would, at least, ensure people have to revisit the "rules". But I don't really believe the problem is that people don't know the right & wrong way to drive. I think some are just too ignorant to care; others feel like they should be the self appointed 'speed police' and force those around them to slow down; and others still just feel like the car they bought came w/some priviledge to own the left lane, or otherwise ignore/disregard any common sense or courtesy.

Also, what I mean by testing is not limited to written exams. In fact I think the book knowledge is the least of my concerns. I feel they should have a more detailed/difficult ON ROAD test. I think they should build an autocross type course and test a drivers ability to navigate in tight areas...Hell, they should even have a high spees course but thats more difficult to do.

I have to agree though...In this case ignorance is NOT bliss.

You mean you didn't get the contract agreement for the Right Lane? They are using a minute plan much like cell phones. You can purchase time so you can hog the right lane whenever you want. They even have rollover minutes...The more you roll your car or someone elses car over the more minutes you get.

They give you a free minivan with every purchase of a two year contract with Geico Insurance. Not to mention the free rate quote.

Yes, I agree with all that. I remember when I took the motorcycle license test in Massachusetts, I was surprised how easy it was. A multiple-choice test that a baboon could pass, and a riding test that consisted of some circles and figure-8s. Didn't touch on a fraction of what you learn in a decent riding course.

One thing that frosts my ***** is all other types of licenses have classes. Pilots, truck drivers, boaters, hunters etc, why automotive drivers licenses have no class system is dumb. I haven't gotten a ticket in close to 10 yrs and I can attribute it to one thing and one thing only, I stopped driving like an ***, make sure I am not the fastest car on the road, and when I do speed on the rare occasion I pick and choose my opportunities wisely. I also would like to say that autocrossing and track days are a great outlet for agression behind the wheel. After an event on the way home you'd think Ms. Daisey is in the car with me.

this really dosent have much to do with speeding but its worth a point, cops are busy busting people with sports cars but pay no attention to people who can not drive

I think they should make it a law that after a certain age such as 55 or 60 you have to re test for your license every other year, some states do it like that. I have nothing against elderly people but its just a fact of life that as you get older your motor skills and awarness tends to dull.

A friend of mine almost died a few months ago because of this, he was sitting on his motorcyle at a stoplight for about a min and was ramed into by a guy in a buick, the guy aparantly did see him and tried to apply his brake when he got close but "had arthritis" and could not put the brake pedal down far enough.... my friend spent 2 months is a body cast. i feel very strongly about this subject i know its hard my grandma wanted to drive when she was 70 and it took about 5 crashes for the family to take her car away. it just not safe.

^^^ AMEN!
ChaseRX8 you hit the nail on the head. Speed (within reason) is not what CAUSES wrecks. Not paying attention to what you and other drivers are doing causes wrecks. Driving slow does not decrease your risk of an accident if you change lanes without looking or signaling. Speeding (withing reason) does not mean you are a heartbeat away from dying.

Here in Middle Tennesse if you aren't doing 75 or 80 you are in the way! Trust me, if you set the cruise at 65 here you will feel like you are real road hazard. I'd rather run WITH the flow of traffic than be run over or blast by some hat wearing blue hair in a buick with the reaction time of a slug.

Just as it's a fact of science that a faster moving vehicle involved in an accident will result in greater injury to the person(s) in it all other things being equal.

God help you Rems31 if you ever get on an airplane. Those things go pretty fast you know. Must be incredibly dangerous.

Be aware of when your state has "operation revune" going on. All states will have times when they are looking to give out more speeding tickets.

The RX-8 is the only car I have owned that I have not gotten a speeding ticket in. When I first got my S2000, I got two speeding tickets in four days.

I use a radar detector that is easy to toss under the passenger seat.

My advice is to use a radar but if you get caught going above the speed limit, toss it under the seat as fast as possible.

If a cop catches you with the radar, they probably wont even cut you a break.

Also, I would advise paying a lawyer and see if he can get it reduced to a non-moving violation so you don't take a hit on your insurance.

In my state, "Improper Equipment" is a standard charge. Sorry sir, my speedo wasn't working properly.

Didnt I agree that speed doesnt cause the accident but can cause deaths/serious injury if you do get into one. So a plane, like a car, is safe depending on who you put in its control. When it boils down to it, it's the driver that makes the car safe/unsafe.
Speed just increases the effects of the mistake of the operator. So if no mistake is made, then there's nothing to amplify.

and that's why I only walk into poles and not run into them...it hurts less :P

With that kinda reasoning then maybe we should have Police aircraft in the air to ticket other aircraft when they brake the sound barrior.

If you were wearing a helmet the pole would not hurt as much.

who said anything about ticketing? I said speed increases the damage/injuries of an accident. Why do you think Aircraft accidents are usually fatal? They're falling FAST down to the ground. They're less frequent but when they occur the results are deadly.

I could have sworn the smiley's expressed the amount of sarcasm I was using.

Perhaps I should have used...

I think people drive too damn slow. It's hazardous. Cars need a bit of speed to AVOID accidents, especially ours.

Stopping at stop signs, especially 4 ways, should be on a need to basis. Slow down, sure, but no need to stop, put it in 1st, if there's no one there.

Highway speed limits and speed traps, notoriously, cause traffic jams. People have to break too much, and that starts a chain reaction.

Police sitting in ditches and on shoulders with their lights off waiting for the next catch ARE ROAD HAZARDS.

Being nervous about getting a ticket limits the amount of enjoyment and performance one can have in and get out of a car. Morally, I think, police have no right to limit my enjoyment. Of course they do just that legally all the time.

I feel less inclined to speed in the GT than I do in the 8. Maybe it's because the 8 doesn't feel like it's going to explode when I approach, or pass, redline.

Could be..

There was a time infact that I applied to both the local Police department and to the FBI as a special agent however I decided that I did not want to persue a career in those fields.

Anyways...back on topic...Cops are bad Mmm'Kay!

Kidding!

I say we vote for an AMERICAN AUTOBAHN!!!!!

1) Everyones vehicle must meet STRICT safety guidelines (tires, chasis, alignment, etc)
2) Every driver must pass a special drivers course to ensure a competant driver
3) Any convictions of alchohol abuse will void you right to use the roadway
4) Must meet strict eye exam specifications
5) etc

Rules:
1) LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING ONLY AND EXTREME VELOCITY
2) Merge to right lane whenever possible unless you are passing
3) Merge right when vehicle in LEFT LANE approaches at high rate of speed
4) ALL passing vehicles MUST use high beams to indicate extreme velocity in left lane.
5) No velocity allowed under 80 mph in areas of highway where high velocity is not restricted.
6) No velocity above 100 mph in high traffic areas (Major cities)

This is just an example and personally I think it would work AWSOME!!

You got my vote. Montana has or had something like this I think. It'd be great.
