Sport Shifting

Learned pretty quickly that you really don't roll back that far (6 inches?) if you can learn to relax and apply a little more gas than normal and let the clutch out a little more quickly until it engages.
I was also wondering if anyone uses the emergency brake when starting on a hill? My dad taught me this trick - When stopped on an incline, shift into neutral and set the emergency brake. When it's time to go, shift to first with the clutch in. Give it some throttle and slowly let the clutch out. As you feel the clutch start to catch, immediately release the emergency brake and then continue to let the clutch out and add more throttle. Off you go up the hill with ZERO roll back. Never had any clutch problems so I don't think any damage was being done.
I haven't tried this technique in years because I feel comfortable starting on an incline these days.
Just wondering if anyone else ever tried this - sorry for the long post.

Using it time to time on steep hills.

I own an automatic and every 3rd or 4th timeI go to a dealership I test drive a manual while my car is being serviced (I teasethe salesmen into thinking Im interesting in swapping for stick). Everythingthey say about the manual is true. It isfaster and with the exception of some key situations (traffic jams and steep hills) is much more fun to drive. Its 4gears vs 6gears -- and 1500 more RPM. Shifting at 7500 in my automatic islike premature ejaculation. My car feels like it wants to last a little longer but it just cant. Ive grownbored of my automatic and the paddle shifters but theonly reason why I havent swapped to a manual is b/c while the 6speed is afaster car - its not fast enough to justify the cash youd lose over it. However if Ihad to do it allover again there isnt a doubt in my mindthat I would get an Rx8 w/a stick.

From: Saskatoon, SK -- go to Winnipeg then head west
funny thing happened on the way to the grocery store
On about day 3 of ownership of an AT model I was headed to the store and for some reason thought I was piloting a real stick. So you have to engage the clutch, right? And if there is no clutch, well, the brake pedal will have to do. Now, that was just a tad embarrassing. . .
At least it didn't stall.

Maybe I'll be "sick" one day next week. *Cough* :D

Who cares if someone doesn't want to drive a manual? I dont think it's is necessary to do so. Automatics are fine enough. And yea, stalling in a manual is a bitch. I prefer SMG over all transmission because a. clutches are worst things ever invented and b. it's a convinence of an auto compared with performance of a manual. The only way I would buy RX8 is if it came with SMT/SMG transmission (Gord said it will). Otherwise, I'll get maybe a g35 auto or mazda6 6 speed auto. Im sorry, but I dont know what mazda was thinking when they put 4 speed auto into RX8. Mazda should use top end auto transmissions in rx8 as well. Not some cheap 4 speed which is probably from MPV. RX8 still rocks regardless of transmissions. haha
