Squeaky Breaks
Anyone experience squeaky brakes so far? I have 4800 miles and it recently became warm here. I had my windows down and heard the squeaking sound. Thought it was someones elses car at first, but unfortunately it was mine. With only 4800 on it, I don't expect the break pads to be worn out quite yet...

4800 seems kind of soon. But, one must keep in mind that these are high performance brakes. High performance brakes have a significantly shorter life span than 'regular' brakes. It is also very dependent on how hard you brake on average and how much wear, you particualr, put on your brakes.
With that said, 4800 seems way too soon, you should have them checked out by Mazda. Do you race our auto cross your car?

Also, squeeking can be caused by dirt or brake dust as well, so try washing them extremely well with a high powered car wash hose.

I have 6,500 miles on mine and they started to squeek at 5K miles. I have washed them throughly with high pressure stream of water and it has not helped.
Anyone has any other suggestions ?

As I have suggested in several of the threads referenced in the above noted threads, turn off your DSC, find an open stretch of road, get up to 60 MPH or so and then stand on the brakes.
If you do that a couple of times, it will end your problem. Its kinda fun, too.
Dirt, dust, rust and uneven wear cause the pads to squeal. Stomping on them will re-bed the pads.
These are high performance brakes and they are seldom driven hard enough to get up to operating temperature so they load up with dust and junk.

Yeah, what he said. I got a chance to do this over the weekend at the track and the squeel I had developed 3000 miles ago is gone.
Teach me to pay attention next time.

Yes this sounds like a very fun fix, remember to wear you seat belts...And i'll try not to do it in front of the speeding 18 wheelers on the NJ Turnpike.

Ack! I did the standing on my brakes trick (you should do it enough so that you're leaving rubber on the highway, right?) and the squeal went away for a few days.
Now, I've got it back. I don't want to have to do this all the time. Are there any longer term solutions, short of buying Ti or Ceramic pads?
Thanks.

I have 11,500 miles on mine, and had brake squeal for about ONE day (at around 9000 miles).
There was a day where the car was driven through some deep water (one of Houston's "showers"), and they began to squeal the next day.
A trip to the auto parts store for some brake shim lube, 30 minutes putting new lube on the brake pad shims (3 on each side in the front, 2 on each side in the back), and not another sound.
I recently changed the brake pads all around (Mazda pads), applied the (included) lube to the new shims, still not a sound.
This could (should?) be done under warranty, one would think, if you didn't feel like doing it yourself.

My squeaky breaks all the time. It's really annoying. I must be squeezing too hard or something. I have to buy a new squeaky at least once a week, but on the positive side - my dog loves the hand-me-downs. :D

That, and I wonder if folks with squeaky brakes also happen to use any commercially available wheel cleaner. Why? I recently used some of this stuff, and bingo! after 7500 miles of silence, suddenly my brakes squeal and scream. I'd bet good money I've inadvertently washed away the shim lube with the spray-on/hose-off wheel cleaner.
I'll reassemble the pads w/lube this weekend

me too
I am also having the squeaky brakes problem. I've taken it in twice now to have it looked at, and both times they say, "The brakes look brand new, and we couldn't hear anything wrong."
I rode around with a tech, and we didn't hear anything. Of course, the next day- SQUEEEEEEAK!!
I'm getting pretty frustrated, and will be taking it back a third time.
I'm curious if anyone has repeatedly taken their car in and had the dealer find a solution.
Nothing worse then pulling up to a light, looking good, and then SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK.
Thanks.

Just like on door hinges, you should spray liberal amounts of WD-40 all over the brake disc. That take care of the squealing.
:p :D :D

An off-topic comment, I'm actually very pleased with the brakes in the 8 and how well they hold up. I've had many cars develop warping in the rotors even at a young age.
I HATE that feeling of "wobbling" when steadily braking b/c of the uneven rotor surface. Drives me nuts.
