The starting RPM is dependent on temperature. If today the sun was out or something else happened to warm the 8 sensors it will not rev much. When real cold it not only will rev, but prevent you from reving above 5~6k (forget the spec) and you probably will think something is wrong.

Not sure what you mean on the 3rd gear issue. 3rd will give you a boost compared to 4th and the engine rpm.

what speed were you at. 3rd isn't all that peppy at low speeds, and you may not really feel the difference between it and 4th. At, for example, 60mph you should feel a difference, but you probably won't at 25mph.

kraji, how long is 'not too long ago'? I'm sure you're aware that the Renesis eats up a little bit of motor oil, and that you should periodically check your oil level. Mazda recommends doing this at every two petrol petrol refills. So the first thing to do is replenish your motor oil.

The rpm difference when starting is just to warm up the cat fast enough for better emission, a higher rpm is actually bad for the engine especially during cold starting. As for the 3rd gear issue, i think its normal since performing a downshift from 4 to 3 requires either holding the throttle a bit longer or doing a two rev to bring rpm up. If this is what you are talking about, I guess its the gear ratio difference that makes the sudden drop in rpm when doing that downshift. However if you are revving close to the rpm limit, it can be done ok. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

From rx7club.com FAQ
My RX-7 rev's up to 3000 RPM everytime I start it when cold
Yep, part of the accellerated warm up process. Start the car with the clutch pressed in, and the car in gear if you don't want it to do that.

Add enough oil to bring the level up to the top mark.

Did you do the oil change? Did you just add 3 qts of oil after draining the old oil or did you check the level as you added the oil? When you change the oil, you should add the new oil until the level is at the top mark. Don't just add a fixed amount of oil and assume that will bring the level up to the top mark. The amount of oil you need to add after draining the oil pan depends on how you drained the oil and how much was drained. And that can vary by up to a qt.

while you guys are talking about oil and changes...any special equipment needed for changing? I have several 2X6's nailed together...staggered...creating a stair effect and place under each tire and drive up on them to a height of about 8 inches or so. Also have a regular filter wrench for loosening if needed...a bucket for used oil. What wrench size? Anything else?
