Stealth mode
I was reading a thread on here earlier today about silver RX-8s having a stealth mode, i.e. People often don't seem to see them and tend to run into or over them. I've had my silver 8 for four days now and almost got crunched no more than an hour after reading that post! Was doing about 45 down a busy road. Saw this dude in a truck waiting at the light that I was approaching, getting ready to make a right into my lane. I'm looking right at the guy as I'm approaching the intersection. He was looking in my direction, but his eyes seemed to be looking right past me or over me. Just as I'm almost in the intersection, he hits the gas and sure enough, he ain't gonna stop. Couldn't have been more than about 3 nanoseconds between me shitting my pants and laying on the brakes and horn! Anyway, he locked them up and missed me by inches.
I'm 43 and unbelievable as it may seem, that's never happened to me before. Coincidence? Or is this part of some curse I heard about on here? Thinking about having my brand new car painted bright ******* yellow!

This is the root cause of The Curse. It has nothing to do about light. A Mazda engineer fell into the first batch of Silver paint and died. It was to expensive to remove him from thousands of gallons of paint so they just blended him in. He now takes revenge on those that have him sprayed onto their car.
Some say, when the light is just right, the Silvers glow a blood red.

Same thing happened to me. Had my 8 just a couple weeks and was sittin' at my PC perusing the forums when I first came across the 'silver curse'. Freaked me out a bit. Anyway, we go hop into the new car a little while later (wife, kids, and I) to go to a party being put on by my wife's boss.
So here we are sitting at a traffic light, minding our own business, when I check my rear view. Lo and behold, I see this little white 4-door Civic coming up rather fast behind me. As he got closer, he very quickly veered to the left, at which point I saw several tiny pieces of his car flying through the air. Turns out he had just been ***-ended by a Hummer H2. HARD. The impact shot him forward, and fortunately for us, he had the wherewithall to veer to the left to keep from plowing forward into me. He came to a stop just outside my driver-side window.
Fortunately, he was OK, but that H2 sure did beat the snot outta his Civic. Poor guy...I bet he hurt like a **** a couple days later. Close call for my silver 8.

I think silver and grey cars (of all makes) sometimes tend to blend in with the road in some lighting conditions. I noticed it several years ago when I owned a grey Plymouth Sapporo.

I've been driving a silver for over two years. The only real problem I've had other than stupid drivers was my own stupid mistake. Stay alert and defensive and no matter what color or what make car you are in, you will be doing all that you can do.

Come to think of it I used to have a Silver '82 (or '83?) Toyota Celica purchased new. Two months after I bought it I took a trip to Chicago and got hit in the left rear by someone pulling out at an intersection as I was turning left in front of him.

So thats where all those odd Orange RX-8 came from.....
Fog and moisture are the real pathogens - here the fog hangs low over the hills and on the hottest day in Summer Morro Rock will be lost in the mist - White, beige and silver cars can disappear and reappear in a most alarming way. Passing a big truck out on 46 East especially bad - you can't see the oncomming, and if you are low and silver they may not see you - ask James Dean!

I noticed yesterday as I was looking at the sales sticker that my 8 was assembled in Horoshima, which brings to mind a disturbing alternate explanation for the "red glow". Yikes!

ok guys i'm the one who posted the stealth mode from mazda.heres the catch ..i drive a o4 titanium grey 6 speed rx8.since the day i got it 04/26/04 it seems to me the car has a crazy here i am for one second and i'm not here the next.some people see it others do not.most people who see me at a light give the best of how sharp my car is and if i like it?i always tell them no matter what they hear i love it for being one of the best out there even with it's small flaws.there is nothing as bad when two driver's one on the left and one on the right both try and turn into you like it's nothing but air there(wtf)your in the middle and thank god the car performs as well as it doe's to get you the hell out of there path and down the road.by the time they find out you were there your gone baby and thats the beauty of this car for me i love so much 1.when they see you it's cool ! 2.when they don't kick butt so they see your tail lights!!

I drove my new 8 in the dark last night for the first time. I had no idea how cool those xenon headlights are! I don't think I've ever even seen them on another car before. Just one more thing I love about this car!

1) Never drive next to someone. Especially avoid driving in their blind spot. Unless there is traffic, I'm always passing.
2) Drive with your headlights on, this doesn't help as much as you'd think though.
3) Aftermarket exhaust. They can hear you coming.
See, moding your car = safety
