Sunroof and Leather

Hello Everyone,

I've taken a few test drives and have decided to pick up a used RX-8 for my daily driver in SoCal. I'm 6'2" and definitely don't want the sunroof. Did Mazda ever option the car with leather seats and no sunroof? Ideally I'd like a Grand Touring with no sunroof but I'm not sure they ever made them that way. Am I stuck with a sport then? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Matt

Unfortunalety the US market is stuck with the sunroof in anything higher than the touring package. I got a sport model for the same reason, although I don't really care about the seats, the cloth seats are fine for me.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Not a big deal, but I thought I would ask to be sure.

Or, just take the sunroof and keep the inside cover closed.

Sunroof is a mega bonus though... why wouldnt you want it?

Wulf - My head is basically touching the roof, particulary at the side. There is like an inch or more clearance difference between the cars that I've sat in. I'm all for sunroofs, but I've always had clearance issues with them in various cars.

I'm not sure I quite understand you. With the sunroof, you gain about 0.5-1.0" in the sunroof part (even being closed). I don't understand how you're losing head room by keeping the sunroof...

It's the supporting structure for the sunroof. The roof is thicker and the left side of my head hits the roof on the sunroof cars. I have over an inch of clearance on the sport. Perhaps the leather / power seats sit a little higher too, but the difference is significant.

HA! I never knew that! Very interesting, but that doesn't surprise me when I think about it.

Maybe instead of getting a custom roof on a GT you could get the seats installed in a Touring...

I too wondered about the head liner area. I have the sunroof, and love it, though also notice if I move my head to the left it will bump against the left side of the liner. Not a real problem, just aware of the fact that the left side liner area is indeed a bit low though that would be the same sunroof or no sunroof.

That's the reason for me buying a sport package model (back in '03) and get custom leather interior later. I specifically did not want the sunroof because I did not fit in the car if it had one. I'm 6' 6" and fit just fine in the RX-8 with no sunroof.

I"m 6'2 also and I have a grand touring with the sunroof and yea my heads kind of close to the roof but it's not that big of a deal to me.. If you wanna get the cloth seats wrapped in leather theres a place here in SD called Auto Fashion that does really good work if your interested...

stupid question but... Did you make sure the seat was lowered all the way? I'm just about 6'1 and have a sunroof and fit fine...

Yeah, the seats were lowered all the way. It was a new car though, and it's possible that the seats could wear down a little bit. My pickup did.
