Synthetics
#26
I know in piston engines, full synthetic is supposed to resist thermal breakdown better than dino oil... I wonder if that makes synthetic less likely to burn completely in a rotary, and whether that would even matter much.
Any thoughts?

Because the 13b gets so hot compared to a piston engine i would think that synthetics would be okay. My dealer uses synthetic and as for the myth about synthetics not burning off like they sure and having the seals stick would only be a factor if you let the car sit for weeks on end after everytime you drove it.

"Conventional four cycle motor oils will typically leave deposits of carbon and ash when injected into the rotary apex seal, corner seal, and side seal areas. Royal Purple’s motor oil actually burns cleaner due to the synthetic base stock being free of contamination and many of the additives being ‘ashless’. This may not be true for all synthetics but Royal Purple has been proven to work extremely well in rotary engines."
This is what ROYAL PURPLE think, i am sure they are biased though

Why?
Maybe I'm being dumb..... (wouldn't be the first time!) but why do some people insist on using synthetics even though Mazda have clearly stated not to do so??? Why risk a problem with warranty issues if you used synthetics (and Mazda would probably know by taking a sample of your oil..) if Mazda decided to push the issue? I don't think they would but after reading a couple of the other threads here about warranty issues and using materials/equip that is not approved by Mazda... it seems a large risk to take for no real benefit at this time, though when the engine is older and out of warranty then maybe I could see the logic to switching over to synthetics if they are proven to be better for the engine after a certain number of miles?
Don't mean to 'harp on' about this subject but I really don't get why some people insist on using stuff that Mazda clearly says "NO' to?
Am I missing something?

Mazda says no because they have not tested the RENESIS with synthetic oil. That does not mean that it is not good for. My dealer uses synthetic so how could they void my warranty? It is proven that synthetics give better protection, so why not use them.

One of my coworkers just bought a silver one from IPAC, BTW. I think people are starting to realize what a great value the 8 is.

My Mazda dealer is very reputable. My last oil change, the work order says my 8 had 5w-20 semi-synthetic oil. As I've always said, they can put mud in the engine - something goes wrong, Mazda is on the hook.

I always dump my cars before warranty expires. I figure by then, the new model will have a 2.0l 3 rotor model producing a gazillion hp capable of turning 2.3g and a top speed of 300mph all the while returning 55 mpg.
No, I hear you. For the long-term owners, this confusion is a bit of a hassle. But even if your warranty is expired, I imagine you would have a legal case against an AUTHORIZED MAZDA DEALER or MAZDA if your car was improperly serviced. Keep your service records.

My Mazda dealer uses Agip oil which is used on Ferraris, does everyones dealers use the same oil. I once asked about the synthetic and I was told that it was no good and cause apex seals to blow (that's just what I was told). Smokin Joes told me to use Castrol GTX 5W30 because the Rotary burns oil more than other engines. I really don't know what to think so I stick with what the dealer puts in the engine, besides the Mazda dealer I go to was once a Ferrari/Mazda service center and an 80 year old, straight "off the boat" Italian man works on my car, he was once a mechanic for the Ferrari Race Team in Italy! I'm comfortable with that.

Actually I did a search and this was one of the results I came up with, but thanks for the direction. Can't get a straight answer anywhere I look anyway, everyone has a different answer. Do you have a link to the thread that has an exact answer besides a inconclusive one? If so thanks.
